Any of your expenses with working as a nurse, such as cost of magazine subscriptions, conferences, scrubs or uniforms, work shoes, socks, stethescope, etc. are considered deductions and can be taken off of your income when calculating taxes.

If pad that salary every two weeks, you should see about $1000 per check. But again, it depends on the number of dependents that you are declaring etc.

if you go to Salary.com there is a tool you can use to help you calculate your salary check, im not sure how accurate it is as im not living there yet, but it may be useful.

just go to the nursing section, then put in your state and whether you would be filing taxes as a single person or married and it calculates state tax and medicare etc.

i thought it was quite good, it also tells you what salary you should be earning

i do not know about ca. i live in nyc so i can tell you. a person who has annual salary of $47,400 and one dependant... gets around $857 per pay check after deduction of all taxes and a monthly house rent ($950) . in nyc there is federal tax, state tax and city tax. plus medicare and some other deductions. one third of salary is generally deducted.

about cost of living, rent is expensive but other expenses like food etc. you can manage with around $400. travelling- gas and parking both are expensive.and for public transporttaion, $2 per ride. other purchases also come out to be expensive because of the tax thing. i guess internet, cable tv and phone is also expensive in comparision to other sub-urban areas. i am not sure, though.

I have an idea now of how much is needed to survive there.

Guess I'll have to do a lot of OT so I can buy the photography equipment I'd been drooling over for years!

Suzanne, how about if you work in Florida? I heard there's no tax deducted from salaries in Florida, is this correct? I know you pay sales tax on just about everything in Florida, so just wondering if this is how taxes are paid, thru purchases instead of earnings :icon_ques

First, your salary in NY and CA is much higher than the number that she threw out there. You may not have children, but there are still plenty of deductions that you are entitled to. And all legal. You will do just fine, if you follow what I tell you to do as far as work, etc.

I was just giving an example. I was not quoting the salary of a nurse. I am aware that New grads earn some $55,000 plus other benefits and shift differentials (total of which comes out to be around $60,000) in NYC. I was offered a $54,650 base salary plus BSN differential($900) plus work experience differential($3000 for my 3 years experience)plus shift differential($1.75 per hour) etc. However, I did not sign with them because of the NY license thing.

as far as i am concern we were poorly paid while i was doing my nursing in UK.We can hardly survive.We need to be careful in our spending or we wont be able to last even for two weeks.This is the reason as to why l left nursing and went back to my country ...
