yesterday while in clinical i was punched by one of my clients, he just wailed on me without any notice. Now my face looks like crap, a huge black eye and cheek on the one side, even the bridge of my nose is bruised.
This man wasn't little either he was compitent, this was all because he was mad that i wouldn't/couldn't give him a narcotic (I'm only a student) I ofered to get the nurse I was co-assigned with but then he got really angry and started pulling out his IV, i stepped closer to encourage him to stop and then he let me have it. I was so shoked, and seeing stars. my nose was gusshing blood and I could barely drag myself out of his room.
ALL that was done was that incident reports were made, no charges. My prof said we should contact the police as this is assult but the administration got all over our @$$es about then the school will not be aloud to return for clinicals for the rest of the semester. This would not only affect my education but about 2/3 of my class. My prof said it was up to me what i wanted to do, and i chose not to call the police because I wanna graduate, and not screw up my classmates year.
But the situation really pisses me off. I look like crap, it hurts and I had to have e-rays of my face to look for broken facial bones.
Thanx for letting me rant
I think psych experience is very valuable because it gives you the skills to see this sort of thing coming. In retrospect the signs were all there but I'm a relatively new nurse and I was focused on the physical stuff - keeping his t-tube, foley and central line in, keeping him in bed, etc. He was intubated and put on propofol later that night, I learned, and then developed ARDS. I hope no one ever tells him what he did. I'm pretty sure he's the kind of elderly gentleman who would be mortified and ashamed that he kicked a female nurse.
Definitely a learning experience!

Call the police!!! My brother would have no problem charging him.As for the hospital, did you talk to their media relations dept.? How would they like this little news nugget to hit the 6pm show. "Student Nurse assaulted--Nursing Students Banned for Reporting Assault". Details at 6!
Your instructor (sounds like a piece of work) go over their head to your Programme Director.
Assault is Assault, Blackmail is Blackmail(and that is what the hospital had done).
Get yourself down to the detachment, STAT and go from there.
I agree with you 100%. The profession of nursing is losing nurses left and right, and this is how the hospital, and school respond to the situation---
This student must go to the police, and then to the media.

Do not let this go. Nurses have been putting up with abuse for a vary long time, and most say nothing. Nurses keep quite because they don't want to lose their job, or not finish school. What a shame, and very bad trade off. Stand up for yourself, and nursing. Go to the police, and the media, TODAY!
The next time a patient wants narcotics, think twice when they get out of control. You were most likley dealing with a drug abuser. Back off, and get help.

CALL THE POLICE. I believe it is now a felony to assault a hospital employee. I know it applies to those in the emergency room. If he was competent I feel he should be liable for his deeds.
The other question I have is regarding the comment that he was requesting narcs. If he is addicted, the hospital may well say that this is an illness and that he is not liable for his actions. go figure. Myself, I'd let the law handle it.
What would you do if this had happened anywhere but in the hospital? You would go to the police without question. The fact that this assault took place at your clinical and now the hospital is trying to bully you does not make this OK. You need to stand up and go to the authorities, not just for yourself but for all of your colleagues. This suffering in silence and allowing ourselves to be abused has to stop. The other replies are correct, let this hospital see this on the news reports, the hospital will change their tune pretty darn fast. I hope you took pictures of your injuries if you decide to file suit against the hospital.
CALL THE POLICE!!!!!!!
NO MATTER WHAT YOUR EMPLOYER OR TEACHER TRIES TO TELL YOU YOU DOOOOO HAVE A RIGHT TO DEFEND YOURSELF, AND IF THAT BAS^%&$ HAD HIT MEi WOULD HAVE LAID INTO HIM, AFTER TO DEFEND YOURSELF YOU MUST ACT OUT IN SELF DEFENSE.
If this had happened to myself or one of th enurse that work with me, the police would be least of this clowns problems. The way I explain it is "This is a teaching hospital, he just learned what happens when you go after one of my nurses". End of lesson.
Hi,
Its been awhile since I last visited this great site! I wonder how the nursing student ended up? I hope she's ok!?!
Anyway, as far as my case- I did go to the Harrison, NY police department and reported the incident. No one has ever gotten back to me in regard to it. As a matter of fact, when I reported it, they looked at me as if, "Lady, this sort of thing happens all the time"! To tell you the truth, if it would have happened to me 10 years ago, my natural reaction would have been to flatten him right on the floor! I was never known to be a push over, and being raised in Yonkers NY- I suppose I learned how to protect myself pretty well if I need to.....
Well, nothing ever happened in my particular case. No one has ever called me in regard to it, either. Just because I am a nurse, doesn't mean that a Home Care Company can send a nurse out without letting them know of the particular dangers with a particular patient, etc. Especially when they sent out a little girl the next day (CNA) to care for him and it happens again! They should be ashamed of themselves! You know who you are. And if anyone ever asks me about working for you, I will tell them! Run! Because you obviously didn't worry about the safety of your personnel. Just remember, what goes around comes around eventually...... You should have provided us an escort. So shame on you!

Please be careful. In my experience working in psych, I remember an adult male placed in his room, I saw the door splitting as he was kicking it. It took about 5 or 6 male attendants to hold the guy down, and they were having difficulty holding him down, while the RN got an injeciton prepared. And watch out if you're holding the shoulder, because they bite. Please be careful. I've also been on when an angry young woman just admitted went running through the halls biting staff as she went.
