I was punched

Nurses General Nursing

Published

yesterday while in clinical i was punched by one of my clients, he just wailed on me without any notice. Now my face looks like crap, a huge black eye and cheek on the one side, even the bridge of my nose is bruised.

This man wasn't little either he was compitent, this was all because he was mad that i wouldn't/couldn't give him a narcotic (I'm only a student) I ofered to get the nurse I was co-assigned with but then he got really angry and started pulling out his IV, i stepped closer to encourage him to stop and then he let me have it. I was so shoked, and seeing stars. my nose was gusshing blood and I could barely drag myself out of his room.

ALL that was done was that incident reports were made, no charges. My prof said we should contact the police as this is assult but the administration got all over our @$$es about then the school will not be aloud to return for clinicals for the rest of the semester. This would not only affect my education but about 2/3 of my class. My prof said it was up to me what i wanted to do, and i chose not to call the police because I wanna graduate, and not screw up my classmates year.

But the situation really pisses me off. I look like crap, it hurts and I had to have e-rays of my face to look for broken facial bones.

Thanx for letting me rant

Call the police. The hospital is acting unethically and illegally.

This was in 2004 people its 2006, it probably was resolved more than likely the person has graduated and is a Nurse

Catwoman! You cracked me up with the photo of Hannah! LOL

And yes! This post was from 2004. Sorry. I just had to reply after so much time. I was wondering about her. I am glad things were resolved for her and that her school backed her up as well as the hospital. And I no longer feel as a RN mule. Where I am now, I am valued and respected. Something I should have received in the first place.

Good for you glad you finally found your niche.

Wow. How often do nurses get beat up on?? That is TERRIBLE!! Knowing myself, I would probably hall off and hit him back. I know I am really not suppsed to do that, but knowing myself I just might. I am not going to let someone pound on me if I can help it. How awful is that???? :angryfire AWFUL people who do that. AWFUL. That makes me REALLY MAD.

I start RN school in Jan. Are there any clues to watch out for??

Thanks!!! Epona

Yes, call the police. Take pictures of your injuries. Press charges. Do not inform the hospital, it is not their nose that was hit, Only the victim can press charges. If you were a waitress at Denny's and got hit because you brought the wrong eggs, you bet the police would be called. Nurses deserve the same protection as a waitstaff.

People...post was in 2004....just a friendly reminder...now back to polar express...."HOT HOT...":lol2:

In my situation, I called the police. I made a statement, I tried to press charges. I tried seeking legal representation. Nothing was done. The patient assaulted me. He was a known sex offender. They sent two of us, anyway to his home for a homecare visit. If anything, they made me feel more victimized at the time. And to this very day, I tell everyone I know about what happened. When it comes to a nurse being assaulted by a patient, nothing is done. Patients continually get away with it. And this needs to stop. We take enough crap from eachother. We don't need it from patients and or the places we work for to boot. It's a crime to assault someone. Whether it be verbal or physical. Just because we are nurses doesn't make it ok for someone, anyone to abuse us, ever.

Your location says Canada. Are you going to school in Canada? If I had been punched then threatened by the hospital I would call the police and threaten the hospital with a lawsuit if they tried to throw us out. However, your laws may be different.

I agree with this exactly.

Lady, PLEASE CALL THE POLICE!!!

That b$#@$% needs to have all the charges you can file against him, then I would get a lawyer to contact this sorry hospital.

How revolting that the hospital doesn't care enough about you that they wouldn't support you during this trauma you have been through.

I'll bet the news would like to know about this.

Many people are continuing to post without reading thoroughly, she has already said she has filed.

Oh, thank goodness. When I read the initial post I lost it.

Yes, this is an old post. But workplace violence occurs to nurses everyday. And not much is done about it. I worked with this MD, who was having a difficult time with a procedure. So he flung an IV syringes across the room in anger. It almost hit another nurse, who actually lost it. She began to scream at him. She reported him, but nothing was done. Administration probably didn't do a thing. He brings money into the hospital. The nurse quit that day. Never to return. She felt victimized by the MD and the hospital. He still flings things across the room that are bloody to this day when he is angry and NO ONE does anything about it.
