I taking my PN entrance test next month and I'm in need of help with Fractions BIG TIME. Examples: 6 7/8 - 3 3/8, 3/4 divided by 12, 2/3 divided by 1/8, 2 3/4 times 1/2 and 12 1/4 - 9 3/4. Please I need help breaking it down from start to finished. You can also e-mail me through the email in my profile or send me a private message (PM) and show me how to solve these problems step by step. Also if you know any web-site or any practice book that will help me mastering Fractions please let me know.
Thanx you'll.

6 7/8 - 3 3/8 =
1) 6 - 3 = 3
2) 7/8 - 3/8 = 7-3 = 4/8 (the /8 denominator doesn't change)
3) answer is 3 4/8
4) 3 1/2
3/4 divided by 12
1) 3/4/12
2) 3/4 x 1/12/12 x 1/12 (in this step both the top (3/4) and the bottom (12) are each being multiplied by 1/12 because when 12 is multiplied by 1/12 this equals 1 - and this way the bottom number is reduced to 1
3) 3/4 x 1/12/1
4) 3/4 x 1/12 = 3 x 1/ 4 x 12
5) 3/48
2/3 divided by 1/8
1) 2/3/1/8
2) 2/3 x 8/1/1/8 x 8/1 (multiply both the top and the bottom by 8/1 because when the lower number 1/8 is multiplied by 8/1 then it equals 1)
3) 2/3 x 8/1/1
4) 2/3 x 8/1
5) 2 x 8/3
6) 16/3
7) 5 1/3
that's a start, hopefully these are correct

go to walmart or target or any other store, go to the book section or toy section, for around $5.00 buyone of the math books for fractions, that is usually with the coloring books, buy one, take home and work all the problems, you will find it very easy to do.
i did this years ago to brush up and passed a pre-test with flying colors. all i needed was a review, been out of school for 20yrs.
hope this helps!

I agree, purchasing a basic math book is a good 1st step. for additional help, try math.com They have a direct link to "help for fractions."

you can get lots of free practice problems and ask for step-by-step solutions for each and every one on the interactmath.com website. this is a math textbook companion website of addison wessley textbook publishers. i am posting the instructions on how to gain access to the website (you have to download two special drivers to use the math software on this website). you want to choose any one of the textbooks that are pre-algebra level, since that is where this kind of fraction problem falls.
here are instructions for accessing http://www.interactmath.com/ . once you are on the site, click the "enter" button. the next page to come up asks you to select an author and textbook title from a drop down menu. there are many titles there. i recommend you look for martin-gay's book (ex: martin-gay: prealgebra: 4e, enhanced - the 4e stands for the 4th edition of the book and you always want to chose the enhanced versions of the software on this site because they are the newest and most updated programs). after choosing your book title, click the "submit" button. at this point, an installation wizard window pops up. you need to install the mathxl player (it's free). you may have to first install an active x driver, but the installation wizard will tell you that. just follow the instructions of the wizard to download what you need. it is all free. once the mathxl player is downloaded and installed, you will be given access to the practice problems for the textbook you chose. [every time you go onto this site, the installation wizard will appear and check to see that you have the proper software installed in order to use the software.] you will first see a page of drop down menus for chapters, sections, and objectives contained within the textbook you chose. by expanding the chapters menu, you can see how the chapters of the book are organized. you want to pick the chapter that addresses fractions and/or ratios. the appropriate sections and objectives for that particular chapter will appear as well as a list of exercises that are links to the problems within that chapter. click on an exercise link and you will be taken to that particular problem. it takes some time to become familiar with using this program. when you go to a problem (exercise) screen you will find active buttons on all sides of the screen that you need to check out and learn what they do for you. buttons at the top allow you to go back and forth between the previous and next math problem so you don't have to keep going back to that first page with all the drop down menus. as you progress through the problems they become more advanced and increase in difficulty. you can ask the program to show you the step-by-step solution for every single problem it presents to you by clicking on a button on the right side of the page that says "help me solve this". a button below it, "view an example", will show you a sample problem of the same type already solved in a step-by-step fashion. you can also print out a step-by-step solution using the "print" button. you have three tries to get the correct response or answer that the program seeks. once either occurs a new button appears at the bottom of the page: "similar exercise". clicking on this button will bring up another problem of the same type exactly like the one you just solved, but with different numbers. all the same buttons on the right side will still work and you can still ask for step-by-step help if you still need it. that is another great feature about this program. buttons on the left help you to enter things like fractions, radicals and powers. play around with them to see how they work. i could not find a help button or a set of instructions to help in using the program, so you are kind of left on your own to play around with the buttons on the left side to figure out how they work for you.
the trick to learning math is to work problems again and again and again. practice makes perfect. you have to master how to work with fractions because they come up again in doing medication calculations by the dimensional analysis method. good luck!

Don't forget your conversion either! In our school, are pre-test included those... 30cc/ml = 1oz., 16oz. = 1lbs. etc...
Good Luck!

most people find multiplication much easier than divison. for this reason, it's better to MULTIPLY by the RECIPROCAL.
becomes
3/4 * 1/12 = 3/48 = 1/16
______________________________________
2/3 * 8 = 16/3

finally it's almost always easier to work with improper fractions. your first step should be converting your mixed fractions (e.g. 1 3/4) to an improper fraction (e.g. 7/4).
Thank you guys sooooo much for all your help. I will definitely go to Wal-Mart and get the book!
