I Need help with Medical Math...

Published

hello there. i'm not an lpn as of yet, but i will be in 2008 permitting if i pass the test. i'm not really good in math and i have disliked it all my life. as you know, nurses need a lot of math in order to do doseage calculations, ht. and wt., surface area, drug doseages for peds, monitoring iv, giving im, sq, or id injection etc...i hope math won't be my downfall as a nurse because i really love nursing! does anybody have any suggestions about an easier way to do mental math for drug calculations??? any help will be appreciated. thank you so much. :):):)

Most of my class, about 30, claimed they had a hard time with math. NOT ONE OF US FAILED OUT BECAUSE OF THE MATH. Some struggled more than others, but ultimately, we all made it through the dosage calculations part. And for the record, I am a card-carrying IDIOT when it comes to math. I simply don't "get it". However, the staff was great at making sure we understood the calculation methods. Don't worry about it too much, you'll do better than you think.

OMG!!! me too, I am also a card-carrying idiot when it comes to math. Math is my worst subject, I let myself get too frustrated:angryfire fast and then i feel like I will never grasp math. How did you do it? if you have any tips or advice I would really appreciate it. Thanks for your post makes me feel like I am not the only one who feels that way about math.

Ur very welcome!!!:chrs::anpom::anpom:How you doing? I am doing pretty good, my husband is helping me with math and it's not too hard right now once I started doing some of the problems and my husband showed me how I started to remember it. But if i need help which I am sure I will I will defintley post here or PM or email you if that's ok. I hope nursing school is going great for you. I am also taking legal and ethical issues in health and human services and I am really enjoying this class right now very interesting and fun class!!! I am so excitied I start Bio100 in a week next Tuesday!!!:w00t::anpom::anpom::hpygrp::wlcmghrt:!!! I will check here in the chat room aound 3:00p.m. my time to see if your there so we can talk ok. Keeo me posted ok!!! have a great rest of the weekend!!!

Hello there missy. I am doing great! I just finsihed a lot of HW I had to do. Now all I have left is English HW. I have to write an essay. I don't like English either, but I will gladly take Math over English, any day. Well, I'm so happy to hear that your husband is helping you with ur math. It's nice to know that you have a support system isn't it? Well, my nursing classees are going fine. I have an ATI practice test on Monday; so I gotta study for it. Yes, that's ok; I don't mind if if post me a math problem. I'll b able to help u if I can. I also started practicing my medical math (my teacher hasn't taught the class yet) and I'm getting the hang of it. Legal and Ethical issues in Human Services sounds very interesting. I remember when I had covered legal and ethical aspects of nursing whch was a rather interesting topic. I liked it becuase I learned how to protect myself from lawsuits and malpractice. Well, I guess I'll ttyl on chat... keep me posted.... :):):):nurse:

I am in a very hard nursing program.. so they say.. They surprised us with a math test the other day and I am sad to say I FAILED!! We are not permitted to use calculators! In the math COLLEGE MATH I should say... class I took we used calculators all the time! So now I am a little disheveled... So There are teachers and schools that do not allow any calculator use at all!!!! Ugg I feel so dumb:(

Helo there.. and srry about your failure. I say, no need to feel dumb. No body is dumb, you're just not good in math; it's the same with me. But I think, with time, the medical math will get easier and easier. I know how to convert and do the math formulas, but when it comes to simple dividng with decimals or multiplying with decimals ( ugghhh those decimals) I don't remember how to do it. Guess I should keep practicing. I suggest that you practice also. I hope you do better next time. And yes, I know how hard an LPN program can be.... I wish you luck in your nursing program and the best of luck on your future math tests in nursing.... Keep practing those probelsm and hold your head high... fiy, they don't allow you to use calculators in the NCLEX-PN either. :w00t::caduceus::):nurse:

Hello Missy!!! How r u? I haven;t talked yo u in a loonngg time. I'm sorry about that; it's just that I've been busy with HW and HOSA, and Nursing. But I will add this peice eof info. Specializes in My first yr. as a LVN!.

The dosages arrent that bad... I am horrible at math, in fact I had to have a tutor for pre algebra back in the day in order to finally get my AA degree. Now Im taking Chem. which is more math and I can barely pass, but need this class in order to get into the bridge Vn-Rn program for next yr. The medical math isnt as bad as you may think... its simple problems.. and if you do it by matching the units.. such as you will be converting pounds to kg. all of the time and all youre doing is either dividing or multiplying in order to match the kg for meds. then there super easy stuff just coverting whats ordering to whats on hand... remember this by ... so whatever the ques. is asking rephrase it to yourself as OK, the dr. is ordering 500mg and what we have On hand is 250mg..simply do the OH (ordered 500) on HAND (250).. hope this makes sense... let me see if I can find a link that better explains ... when you get to IVs youre taking the most imp info such as ml of fluid x the drip rate and divie by the time.. hope this helps even though it sounds super confusing it isnt so bad ...

good luck in your nursing career ...
