I Need help with Medical Math...

hello there. i'm not an lpn as of yet, but i will be in 2008 permitting if i pass the test. i'm not really good in math and i have disliked it all my life. as you know, nurses need a lot of math in order to do doseage calculations, ht. and wt., surface area, drug doseages for peds, monitoring iv, giving im, sq, or id injection etc...i hope math won't be my downfall as a nurse because i really love nursing! does anybody have any suggestions about an easier way to do mental math for drug calculations??? any help will be appreciated. thank you so much. :):):)

hey guys i'm at at this forum and i also have a hard time doing math calculations on meds.i will post the exact problem that i'm having later.any help i can get would be apppreciated.thanks

Most of my class, about 30, claimed they had a hard time with math. NOT ONE OF US FAILED OUT BECAUSE OF THE MATH. Some struggled more than others, but ultimately, we all made it through the dosage calculations part. And for the record, I am a card-carrying IDIOT when it comes to math. I simply don't "get it". However, the staff was great at making sure we understood the calculation methods. Don't worry about it too much, you'll do better than you think.

thank u Bluegeegoo2. I really appreciate it. Actually I have been practicing my med calculations and I think I got it.. I understand the formulas and by golly I hated math all my life, but now that I'm doing nursing, the math makes sense to me... Isn't that amazing?? Now my class hasn't done meds or dosage calculations for that matter, but I have been trying to get ahead and understand the medical math by practicing my meds. :w00t::w00t::twocents::caduceus::nurse::):)

sure, np. I'll b glad to help you. I've been practicing my dosage calculations and I've got it.. it's really not THAT hard as I thought it would be. So when u need help, post it here. And btw, Welcome to the forum... :[anb]::igtsyt::welcome::wlcmggrp:

Hello, Missy. Srry I havent been online in a few days. I have been veyr busy. I just wanted t let u kno that I went to compete at my HOSA competiton. I did 2 out of a possible 6 skills. The skills I did were Trach care and changing a sterile dressing. It wasn't hard, but I missed like 5 points though. Idk how I did. I just hiped I passed. I will find out my score on Feb 7th and I'll be sure to let u know. I hpe that eveyrhting is going okay with u. I hope your math class and ur other clases are going fine. I hope that ur doing well. Well, I gues I'll ttyl. Take care and enjoy ur weekend. :cheers:

That's ok I understand we can talk whenever you get a chance. I am so happy for you that you did so well. As for math I am trying to make it I am sure I will eventually be able to get better at math. I have a great weekend and keep me posted ok!!!

I am doing pretty good, my husband is helping me with math and it's not too hard right now once I started doing some of the problems and my husband showed me how I started to remember it. But if i need help which I am sure I will I will defintley post here or PM or email you if that's ok. I hope nursing school is going great for you. I am also taking legal and ethical issues in health and human services and I am really enjoying this class right now very interesting and fun class!!!
