I Need help with Medical Math...

Nursing Students LPN/LVN Students

hello there. i'm not an lpn as of yet, but i will be in 2008 permitting if i pass the test. i'm not really good in math and i have disliked it all my life. as you know, nurses need a lot of math in order to do doseage calculations, ht. and wt., surface area, drug doseages for peds, monitoring iv, giving im, sq, or id injection etc...i hope math won't be my downfall as a nurse because i really love nursing! does anybody have any suggestions about an easier way to do mental math for drug calculations??? any help will be appreciated. thank you so much. :):):)

hey, I got it! thank u Agldragon. :):):nurse:

BTW thanks bluegeegoo2. I really appreciate it. Now I have no problems doing medical math without a calculator. I'm still a bit shaky but I've been practicing and with practice I'll get better. You and Agldragon are truely lifesavers... LOL!:D:nurse:

grains to grams? does anyone know if physicians prescribe meds to nurses in terms of using grains? I heard APAP is a common med. thank you. :):):):nurse::twocents:

Peridotgirl, I don't know what physicians prescribe, but I do know that I got a grains to grams question on my NCLEX, and was very glad I'd reviewed!

thank you so much, WELL'SEE. I appreciate it. So how r u doing today?? I hope fine. I only reason why I asked is physicians use grains is because I heard hospitals don't use "grains" anymore as well as cc's. I heard that they replaced cc's with ml's. Which in my opinion, I think that they should have left the system just the way it is becuase ml's and cc's are the same thing. just my :twocents:. I have to review the conversions this weekend. so far I've gotten down g to gm, lbs to kg, and oz to ml. I still need to review gr to g. :):):):nurse:

Hi Peridotgirl- I'm doing great, and I hope you are too... thanks for asking!

Something I learned pretty quickly is- what we learn in school and what awaits us in "the real world" is not always one and the same.

I had the conversions down cold when we did that segment in school, but like everything else, "if you don't use it, you lose it"... and I did lose it. Review for the test was pretty easy, but I won't retain it because I never use it. In any event, if I come across this in the workplace, I'll just take my PDQ out of my pocket and review it.

Tests, don't you love them?

Good morning We'llsee. Ur welcome and glad to hear that ur doing great. Well, yes, I have often heard that what we learn in nursing school is not exactly the same as it is in the real world. The only reason for that is because we can never learn all there is to learn in the "real world" until we as nurses, get out there ourselves. and of course "If you don't use it you lose it." Well, I better get to those conversions. have a good weekend and I'll ttyl. btw, what nursing do you do if u don't mind me asking. :):):):nurse:

Hi peridotgirl and Happy Weekend to you, too. I'll better be able to answer your question (about what kind of nursing I do) in another month or so because I just today found out that I PASSED the dreaded NCLEX! Money and paperwork for the license has been sent and in 3-4 more weeks I'll have that treasure in my hands!

I plan to work while continuing my education. I'm interested in a local juvenile detention center, but we'll see ;)

Hello We'llsee and afternoon to ya. Well, I'm very proud of you and happy to hear that u passed the NCLEX-PN... as I have read in other forums, I heard about the NCLEX and that it is not an easy feat. Most people walk out of the test center crying; thinking that they did horrible. I have never read a post of someone who took the NCLEX-PN and thought they had passed. so Congratulations to u and u r now a NURSE.... yaayyyy!!! what a sense of accomplishment. yes, I'm sure that u cannot wait to get your hands on that license. I can't wait till I pass my NCLEX which hopefully I'll b taking in Januray of '09. I gotta pass my LPN course first... lol! :yeah::nurse::nurse::cheers:

hi missy, long time to see post.. LOL! well, I guess I'll ttyl.. enjoy ur day. :nurse:
