I’m in trouble with DSD at work and it’s killing me that I could be fired

So I got a phone call this evening from the DSD telling me a CNA told her she had given me a stack of sign in papers and she was wanting to know what I did with those papers. I told her I thought they were to go into the binder where we all sign after clocking in and I was unable to fit them in the binder so I placed the stack under the binder. She was extremely angry at this response and asked why I would do that. She said they were LEGAL DOCUMENTS and if I didn’t know where they belong I should’ve delegated it to someone else like the CNA did to me. She told me she is too upset to even talk to me and said she’ll talk to me on Monday before hanging up the phone. I’m now embarrassed and anxious because I don’t know what she’s going to do or say to me on Monday. I hate the CNA who gave me the papers because I have my own job to do and she could’ve given them to ANYONE ELSE. I know it seems wrong to put blame on other people but I truly feel it’s her fault. I don’t want to be fired because it’s my first job and I’ve already memorized all the medications for the patients. I don’t want to lose it and have to hunt again for a full time job when I don’t know what else could be out there for me. The DSD was extremely angry and I could her the disappointment and frustration over the phone. I feel like a child who’s in trouble with his mom. I can’t stop thinking about this and I don’t want to suffer like this until Monday.

This DSD (not sure what that is) needs to chill out. You didn't do anything wrong and don't be convinced of it. It sounds like a hostile environment and they don't have a right to make you feel that way. Tell the lady it was not malicious what you did and the papers can be replaced (something like that).

Hello!

I am sorry you had a bad experience at work, and were worried for your job. I am hopeful that you got answers early this week.

It doesn't sound to me like you did anything wrong, you merely answered a question.

It appears to me that these papers were the direct responsibility of this DSD, and as such, should have been taken care of by that person.

I must ask, what is a DSD?  The only thing that came to mind was director of staff development.   If that is the case, I must say, WOW! The response to you when asking about the papers is not exactly the way to develop the staff.

I find it odd that a CNA had these papers if they were as important as this DSD has made them sound. This is not to say that CNAs aren't responsible individuals, more that the person that wanted something sent to another department maybe should have taken them on their own, or perhaps used a departmental mail envelope with instructions inside or similar scenario. Also, when the person gave them to the CNA, what did she tell him/her to do with them?

I would be interested in knowing the outcome of this situation if you are interested in sharing.

Best Regards!

That sounds like a pretty toxic work environment to be sure. I too am not familiar with the DSD acronym? One of the management people to be sure, but certainly not one good at the job if the facilities paper filing/management system is that poorly designed that they feel the need to blame somebody when those papers inevitably get misplaced.

The only thing besides this admittedly stressful situation that was kind of a red flag for me was your statement that you already memorized all the medications for the patient's....Don't do that, not ever.  If nothing else med orders change, if you don't utilize the proper procedure for passing meds you will miss an order change eventually.  There are corners that can be cut but med administration is not one of them. Don't ever just rely on your memory of what the patient meds are, that's just a med error waiting to happen!

I haven't spoken with the DSD again since the phone call that prompted me to post this topic. She hasn't shown up to work. I heard she tested positive for COVID19 and she's planning to move out of state. No one has mentioned anything to me about the papers and it's been completely swept under the rug at this point.

What's happening here is this DSD lady messed up, and didn't take responsibility for her papers properly. She irresponsibly handed them to a CNA who then informally gave them to you. Now the DSD is trying to backpedal and blame you for the whole thing, which is classic projection of her own mistakes on to you. She knows you are a newbie and much more easily bullied than a crusty old bat like me.

She's gone and you know why she didn't meet her job expectations. Making everyone else responsible for her job actions (performance). And using up her sick time paid days before she goes.
