The other night there were a SLEW of people in with cold symptoms. Meanwhile *I* had it, was miserable, and if I wasn't at work, I was in bed. Sorry to whine, but I had to listen to so much whining that I figured it was MY turn!:lol2:

I love "If you give her any medicine she'll just throw it up" in front of a three year old who proceeds to do exactly that. Apparently this kid will puke Kool Aid if you tell her it's medicine, and Mom says "how do you get kids to take their medicine?" Well, first you don't give them permission to refuse.

I had someone come in the other weekend to get checked out for a problem she'd had for 3 years. She'd been referred to a specialist but didn't go, but for some unknown reason, she was inspired that night to go to the ED to have it checked, even though it was not troubling her at the time.

Oy.

I had the day from ach-ee-double toothpicks today, with every kid complaining of a fever and cough. "And you would like us to do what for your cold? Did you even try Robitussin? No? Oh, I see......you want us to write a script for Robitussin so you don't have to pay for it!"

OK, I confess, I do like triage, but can't take it more than 3 days in a row. It does get to you. The worst thing about triage is that every time you take a patient back, not only the nurse, but the damn doctor bitches at you and asks you why you gave them the patient and not someone else. I didn't know we get to pick and choose our patients.

I actually like to triage as well. And my ED is small enough that it's not usually just one of us stuck out there the entire shift, plus sometimes we have downtime. But I had just had it with them all the other night, one more person whining (sp?) about how miserable they were and I was gonna blow!:angryfire

But, I'm off until Wednesday night, so I'll have had a good break and will be ready to trudge back into the trenches.

Can three-year-olds puke at will? I've known kids to stick their fingers down their guts for fun but never met a three-year-old who could puke at the suggestion alone.

Yes, my 3 y/o can puke at will. Just started around Thanksgiving after a bout with a stomach bug. If she eats something she percieves as "yucky", or with "skin on it", she will barf before it hits the back of her throat.

Yep, they sure can.

Unfortunately, my daughter was one of them ... :uhoh21: One episode of vomiting shortly after some Tylenol susp administration somewhere in her early elementary school years *convinced* her that she "couldn't take it." (sound familiar, ER nurses??). Fortunately, she has been a healthy kid, so we didn't have to deal with this more than once a year or so. As soon as she was old enough, I had her learn to swallow pills. No more drama.

I love hearing "S/he won't take medicine."

I get down to eye level with the little brat and tell him, "You do not have a choice. You will take this Tylenol and you will not spit it out."

Then I get an astonished, "How did you do that?"

My answer is always "Who's in charge, you or your child?"
