Hello folks.
I have been worked at adult Med/Surg unit for 6years.
So, I have not much experiences taking care pediatric patients.
Always I have been facing to them, it is too hard coping with their tiny tiny little bodys, vessels and also calculating medicine doses and administration is big challenges. In addition, guardians are always sensitive with my nursing care, even though I am a skillful nurse. For these reasons, I really admire PED nurses :)
Here is my question.
I know a lot of my RN friends would like to be a pediatric nurse, such as NICU or PICU or just general pediatric unit. I am surrounding RNs who want to be a pediatric nurse. However, I never been want to be a pediatric nurse.
I just wonder that is there anyone likes me? In these days, even I feel like I am abnormal.
Please tell me your opinion. Thank you in advance.
I almost quit school when I was in my peds rotation (the deaths were too much). Then I had OB...oh dear, that was the last straw! The whiny moms were just too much. I stuck it out only to go into med/surg (aka enema alley). Whew...I didn't quit and I am ever so grateful that I didn't!
I never felt guilty for my feelings I had about OB and Peds.
oh, definitely not abnormal at all. I feel you on that, I'm the same way but have been pretty much ever since I got into nursing. No peds or mother/baby for me, ever. I just started working on surgical ICU and though we don't get peds much, we can still get teenagers from 14 and up but I think I can manage. As long as they aren't like 14 and younger, I couldn't do it. I would cry nonstop if I had a peds patient and they died in front of me.
I really really hated my OB rotation. I found myself thinking "Oh get over it, you aren't the only person to have done this. I've had three of these little turds cut out of me!" LOL - it didn't give way to empathetic nursing care at all.
LOL!
When I did my OB rotation, one of the laboring moms kept yelling, "get this thing outta my kootchie!"
I wanted so badly to tell her I bet she wasn't saying that 9 months ago!

It's normal to have preferences. Sometimes it just takes awhile to figure it out.
Personally, "I don't do kids" is my phrase when I work in other areas of the hospital.
