*sigh*

Doing away with the position - informatics.

Sue--I'm glad to hear all of this.

I have recently gone throught a *similar* thing with my 80-year old mother.....she fellon the ice in February and fractured her elbow and shoulder, and had a total shoulder replacement, was in the hospital for a week and in a rehab center/nursing home for 2 weeks. I was doing a 13-week travel assignment in NYC, and the 13-weeks was up at the end of February. I called out one week (3 days) and made up the week at the end of the contract........after the surgery they had her on Dilaudid, and she was incontinent and totally out of it, so I was cleaning her up every 30 minutes, moving her around in bed, getting her up, feeding her, etc. Then on April 1st she was diagnosed with colon cancer and had a colon resection on April 5th. She came home 5 days after that surgery----so, not only was I dealing with a complete joint replacement, I was also dealing with a big belly wound and messed-up bowels...........

I finished my 13-week contract by the first week of March, and I have been able to be at home with my mother and take care of her. If it weren't for me, she would have been in a nursing home.

Things happen for a reason, Sue. I truly believe that. Just like when my mother got pregnant when she was 40 (this was 40 years ago, before sonograms and amnios), 11 years after giving birth to my brother, the doctors wanted to do an abortion and she wouldn't let them.......but, she was afraid and wondered if she and my father would even live long enough to see me grow up. Well, my father died 17 years ago, and I am the only child who is not married and who doesn't have a family and responsibilities, so I was able to take care of my mother. God apparently had his own "plan" for things, and it has worked out very well!!!

I am glad that things worked out the way they did..........and I totally understand when you think about how adept you are at this stuff..........the one difference is I can YELL at my mother when she is driving me crazy, and I can't do that to a patient!!

By the way----I don't know what "kudos" are, BUT I WANT SOME!!!! :w00t:

Prayers and happy thoughts for you Sue, I hope everything works out and bless your heart for taking care of your parents .... Maybe go Per Diem if you can for extra cash on the side.

Huge hugs to you, Sue. It is THEIR loss. That job was just a stepping stone to new and better things for you.

By the way----I don't know what "kudos" are, BUT I WANT SOME!!!! :w00t:

:D

You got 'em.

Thanks for your post. I don't need to yell at Dad, I need to yell at Mom. She has her own very inefficient, drive me nuts way of doing things and something tht should take 10 minutes takes have an hour so I just tell her to let me do it and get out of the way.

:)

LOL--Oh my God, Sue, I know EXACTLY what you mean!! Maybe it is their "generation" and how they do things. My mother had absolutely no idea about "current" cleaning supplies and fluids, etc. I bought Lysol handi-wipes in the container, and when she came home she thought that they had just come out in the stores.............I washed her windows with this stuff by Windex and it took me 30 minutes---she used to get on a ladder with a bucket and sponge and towels and it took her 4 hours to do......and I have actually gotten her to start using the dishwasher, she was still washing dishes by hand EVERY SINGLE DAY. Since we are nurses, we have a special ability to get things done very well in record time, with excellent resources and do a SPECTACULAR job!!

It is frustrating to deal with older parents---I know with my own mother that SHE DOESN'T LISTEN!!! You think she hears me but she isn't listening and after I've said something, 15 minutes later she is asking me the same thing.

I love her to death and I am very glad that I was/am able to take care of her and that she didn't end up in a nursing home---but, DAMN, I am telling you, it isn't without its frustrations.:smackingf

I don't think that it would ever make me go back into LTC though---taking care of my mother is one thing, taking care of lots of them for a living? No thanks!

And by the way---WHAT ARE KUDOS, ANYWAY?

Do I get a prize if I get a lot of them? Like a trip to Tahiti or something?

:D

Kudos is just the new AN thanks. :)

I guess the thing with LTC is I really always felt terribly for the residents, esp. the ones who could have been cared for by family with relative ease. I hate to see people discarded. I've also seen cruelty and they need me around to protect them from impatient, ignorant folks.

:)

Well, Sue, I was wondering when someone was going to get that avatar. Guess we can now start calling you Jackie Sue. Or do you prefer Sue Jackie? :p

Oh Sue, I know you from the other posts on the distance ed site.

I hate to hear this.

I am glad about the COBRA, my brother lost his job in Feb. and still hasn't been able to find one...thank goodness for COBRA, or his kids wouldn't be eating.

It just proves what I was telling others about nursing in this economy, it can happen to anybody...

Good luck and best wishes :redpinkhe
