this radio dj "reviews" his hospital stay. he feels he would be in "better hands if i had nurses that were sexy". grrr!! tired of men thinking nurses are pin-up girls in stiletto heels wearing white miniskirts! what a jerk!

hey whats up? big boy here. as a lot of people may have noticed i have not been on the radio much the past couple of days. that is because i have been in the hospital. since i have not been able to share some of my experiences on-air i thought i would do it right here online.

first of all i am in here because i have a skin infection called cellulitis. it is on my right leg and it really sucks. it has been very painful but thank god for pain meds. when you really need them they are truly a blessing. as far as the rest of my experience, i guess it has been okay other than a few major flaws. first off i know no one likes to be in the hospital (other than my dad). one thing that is truly messed up in the health system is in order to be admitted to the hospital you have to go through e.r. now just to walk through the door of the e.r your looking at about a $2,000 charge at least so if you do not have insurance or you are poor you’re screwed. i feel like that is wrong and should be stopped but you know how that goes doctors and politicians walk hand in hand.

my next biggest complaint is by far the food. the nearly 8 grand price tag it cost to be admitted to the hospital should totally include some 5 star food like steak and lobster. i realize it is not a resort but i do think part of the getting well process should be great comfort food. my next thing was the room accommodations, with it being a hospital it obviously gets a great vote for being clean but the beds are basically cheap foam and cotton covered in water proof plastic. i swear my bed could be used as a flotation device. i have greatly enjoyed all of the buttons my bed has to offer as i treated it like a theme park ride all weekend. it has kept me amused. however i have to be in this bed pretty much at all times. my back and my butt are killing me. they need some nice pillow top mattresses so people can sleep well.

my last thing is maybe the least important but it would be a nice change in community hospitals. i know there are a lot i repeat a lot of sexy nurses here in the tri-state. during my stay i had none. i had a few that were as evil as they were ugly. one lady was like 70 and she seemed as if she had just had a stroke. there was even one bigger than me with very hairy man arms as well as a few that were very nice and helpful. i just feel that i would feel in much better hands if i had nurses that were sexy. i would want them stabbing me with needles, checking my vitals and doing to me what ever the doc ordered. any chance to get them to touch me would be amazing. well that is my hospital experience and what i feel that it should be. please leave me your feed back below

I realize he is a shock jock, but part of the problem we have today is that we don't demand respect. I've read hundreds of posts where we as nurses tend to accept negative behavior rather then confront it.

As the medical field begins to adopt the attitude that "the patient is always right no matter how wrong they are", I find myself struggling with the right answers. It frustrates me when patients belittle my PROFESSION. Nursing isn't a job. It's a career - a profession. We are professionals and we deserve to be treated as such!

Would you ask your lawyer to hike up her skirt? No. Would you ask your IT specialist to open his shirt so you could see some chest while he works on your "hard" drive? No. Would we expect our real estate agent to roll around on the floor and invite us to experience how soft the "shag" carpet was? No. You wouldn't. Why not? Because they are professionals and they are respected.

We should be too. I honestly don't think he believed he was being offensive. He really does seem like a buffoon. As long as no one is telling him he is offensive, then he can go on ignorantly believing he was correct in assuming nurses should be hot, young, and sexy and he somehow missed out. He must have been there the day AFTER they discontinued wearing the white tube tops with the red cross on the front. Shucky darn.

The great thing about nurses is that not only are we a profession full of intelligent, educated, fantastic women (and MEN!), but we are a MASSIVE group. There is power in numbers and whether it's for 'shock' or not, money talks and they listen to what the majority has to say. There are men calling the station agreeing with this goober. If there is no one calling to say "Stop!" then they'll just keep on keepin' on.

I am so very proud to be a nurse. I love my job. I love educating new moms. I love being part of the process that brings a new baby into the world! I love helping others. I wouldn't do this if I didn't love it. I hate to see the profession I am so proud of reduced to a trashy pole-dancing shadow of what we really do.

Sherri I agree with you 100% People have the stereotypical image of nurses that they learn from the media. This guy probably has a fantasy for all of the professions you mentioned in your post. He is more than likely an individual that would assume I am gay because I am a male nurse. It is highly important that (we) continue to push it on society that we will not be looked at as anything less than integral parts of the healthcare team not to mention the people that you will be cared for by if and when you are in the hospital. WE are the ones doing the work. We are the ones monitoring all of the things that the Docs decide to do in their 5 to 10 minute review of all of the data that WE collected the prior 24 hours. WE must conduct ourselves accordingly which means that our unit councils need to be more involved in setting the standards of behavior and appearance that they will expect from their nurse. It must come from the peer to peer level that we will not tolerate anything less than the utmost professional behavior when in the eye or earshot of our patients and their families. I find that probably 95% of the nurses, male and female, on this ICU are right on the money. The others just need a bit of guidance, ie. that it is not okay to talk about the club or let their thong show or wear see through scrub bottoms when the public can see you. I am not judging anyone's lifestyle. I do not care what people do so long as it does not decrease their effectiveness as a caregiver. That is my 2 pennies for what it is worth I am sorry that it upsets you so. Just remember people like me really love the fact that there are people like you in the profession.

I love to have a good time at work and play around a bit. I think it is essential in this stressful environment that we are in, but there is definately a time and place for it. We must always remember that even though this environment, in my case ICU, is common to me, it is not to the patient and family. The patient whose BP requires a pressor to maintain or we are looking at a probable intubation for someone with resp distress/failure truly needs to feel like we got it. They need to know that we are cool and calm and professional even if on the inside you may be thinking oh **** this doesn't look very good.

Completely agree on all of your points.

O/T from the OP, but:

I had a conversation with someone just the other day regarding empathy, and it mirrored some of the things you said above (re: commonality). My *specialty* (a lot of people don't think it is one) is med-surg. Sometimes nurses and doctors begin to view surgery, esp "easy" ones like lap appys and choles, as "no big deal." They can forget that while THEY see those things literally every day, ANY surgery or hospitalization is a life-impacting and life-changing event for the patient going through it.

Keeping that cool, calm, professional exterior in the face of "oh **** moments" is very important, and it makes it that much more important to have a place like this to come to to have fun, joke around, etc. You're preaching to the choir!

I'm not familiar with this radio station or their DJ's, and "The Rob's" tone doesn't *quite* seem to match what he is saying.......so I don't know if he truly WAS mad, or if it was for show, or what. I WANT it to be legit, but I can be kind of jaded sometimes. :p

Yes we all need a place to have fun and laugh as I believe laughter is very good for the soul. Plus where else when you work night shift can you find literally thousands of folks talking about serious issues as well as helping each other enjoy the 12 long hours of darkness and solitude (can you tell I hate night shift) with laughter, jokes, and encouragement? This site rocks in my book! Oh and p.s. medsurg is a huge specialty IMHO!

I thought it was a farce. It's so fake that it is more offensive than the original comments.
