I just failed my 2nd attempt for the nclex-rn...I'm really down, pls help me pass..

Published

Hi there friends,

My name is Marie K. Cline. I'm a international-trained nurse from Cebu, Philippines. I live here in Ohio now since Dec. 26, 2006. Ever since I got here it had been toil for me getting to qualify for the nclex-rn. As any international-trained graduates I had to take on the toefl.ibt test (english profeciency exam) and the cgfns to qualify for the nclex. I failed my first take for the toefl.ibt last sept. 08 and passed my 2nd take of nov.08. I passed my cgfns qualifications of oct'08. Now all I have to do is pass the nclex-rn to be a registered nurse and so I can get a job here in united states. Unfortunately I took my 1st take last yr of july 25th of 2008 with 75questions, but I didnt made it. So I decided to study harder and see if I could revamp myself and do a better job the next time around. So I did my best, actually my very best. I wasn't really a bad studid. Actually I was top in my class back home (Phils. ) but somehow I just couldn't pass this test. I took my 2nd try for the exam last wednesday of Aug 13' 09. After I got home, I tried the trick yesterday and it let me go through the cc/payment option. I was totally upset. I was bawling yesterday, even today, this morning, but now I've found peace with myself I guess I'm ready to get back in track, but I just couldn't believe that I didnt made it because I was really calm and sure of myself when i took the test except for the calculation part which I was totally bummed and cofused if I had the right answers, other than that I had SATA's and Med-surg problems that I was really sure I had them right but those 4 calculation problems I had was a total mind-game for me. Mini-maini-moo...geez i was just totally guessing. I had the same problem with my first try last year drugs and calculation. I'll be waiting for my paper trail (big brown envelope as they say hehee) so I can see where I headed wrong. Other than that, I just felt really down right now. But I'm not giving up. It's awful to fail...but we won't really appreciate success if we dont fall right?

Like one poet had once said, "The highest reward for a man's toil is not what he gets for it, but what he becomes by it."- by John Rustin

It's tough it really tough guys, for all of us that didn't made it. But let's be happy for the ones that did made it. Let's help each other get through this last pedestal for our success to become a bonafide registered nurses in the future. It's really awful that we have to go through this challenge in our lives inorder to be measured if we are adequate nurses but the fact remains the board just wanna make sure that we are reliable nurses to serve our patients/clients and that we are responsible leaders for our colleagues.

I wanna share this poem to you guys that have truly made my day despite of the fact that I didnt made it of passing the exam. I found this poem in one of my chicken soup for the soul book and it goes like this:

"DON'T QUIT" -BY Clinton Howell

When things go wrong,

As they sometimes will,

When the road you've truding seems all uphill,

when the funds are low, and the debts are high,

and you want to smile, but you have to sigh.

When care is pressing you down a bit,

Rest if you muchst, but don't quit.

Life is queer with a twist and turns,

As every one of us sometimes learns,

And many a failure turns about,

when he might have won had he only had stuck it out;

Don't quive up though the pace seems slown,

You might succeed with another blow.

Success is a failure turned inside out,

the silver lingina a tint of the clouds of doubt.

And you may never can tell how close you are,

it may be near when it seems so far;

So stick to the fight when you're at your hardest hit,

It's when things seemed worst,

that YOU MUST NOT QUIT!

Don't ever give up.

"I hope I have made some of you out there hopeful..for I am hopeful too that one day I'll pass this exam once and for all. It may be a long and winding road even turbulent and bloody but hey we'll get there! In my side of the story I do only have one chance for this exam becuase if I don't make it then I have to go through another set of toef.ibt and cgfns again, which I certainly don't wanna go through all those exams again. I mention earlier right that I'm an international-trained nurse. Well, inorder for us to qualify for the boards we have to take on the toefl.ibt and cgfns, now my toefl and cgfns are going to expire this nov.04 of this year so If I dont pass the nclex this time around then I have to apply for the boards starting back at one and that is to take on another english proficiency exam and entrance exam. So it totally sucks! But I don't be negativist! I wanna be hopeful and optimist. So that's why i'm encourage everyone who's in my shoe to the same this. Stay Positive and Reach your dreams. Never give up on those dreams ever. Do not let anybody pull you down. Stand up with a Smile and Go on Living. Live your dreams. And for all of us that didn't made it hey, let's all help one other and make it a success. Cheer up! It's not the end of it all...we have to stand up tall, and aim high ti'll we reach the top with a sigh."-Marie Dee K. Cline

:heartbeat"hi, im so sorry to hear that you didnt make it the second try. i to came from the phil graduated march 2006 and it took me 5 trys to finally be a registered nurse. took the test last mon aug 10 and found out i pass last thurs from the Ca BON. anyway after reading your post i can tell you have that determination and fighting spirit that is a good thing it will help you allot. my advice for you is study again focus on your weaknesses and do a 100+ questions everyday and try to aim to always get a percentage of 75% or higher that way you can gauge yourself that's what i did. and also in everything that you do always put God first. hope that helps you. oh my test scores were 76, 75, 75 ,75 and finally i passed at 75:wink2: if we can do it you also can surely do it. Good luck on your future test and enjoy it cause it will be your last.":heartbeat

Hi there! Thank you so much for taking the time to send me reply. I truly appreciate it. I will surely take on to what you have said. I will focus on my weaknesses and get on answering 100+ questions a day and try to get that mark of 75-76%. It'll be hard but that'll be a goal i'll try to achieve. In my test performance eval. score it had been noted in their that I was below the passing standard for management of care, reduction of risk potential, and health promotion and maintenance...all the 5 categories were near the passing standard. I really don't know how to read this peformance test score but I do believe that I got boned by my pharmacology (drugs and calculations and my SATA questions when I took on the board). Do you know how to analyze this score? (Is somebody out there can help me out with this performance evaluation of mine so I can remedy my faults?) Anyhow, I'll do what you have suggested, practice and practice more Q and A's about 100+ items/day trying to achieve a 75% test score. I'll surely do that. Thank you for trying to help me out. I truly appreciate it. Hopefully this time around I'll make it. I really hope so. It get's really tiresome studying but ahmm...I'm not giving up. I'll stick to the plan and keep on going. I'll try to do a better job next time around and hopefully I'll make it. Again, thank you very much. I hope to hear from you soon.

AND A VERY BIG CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU FOR PASSING THE TEST!!!!:yeah::yeah::yeah: WAY THE GO! YOU DESERVE IT FOR ALL YOUR HARD WORK AS WELL...CONGRATULATIONS MY FRIEND, I TRULY ENVY YOU, ONE DAY I KNOW I'LL GET THERE TO..BUT RIGHT NOW, IT'S TIME TO CELEBRATE FOR YOUR SUCCESS. CONGRATS!!!!

:heartbeat"took mine for 2nd attemp on Aug 2,2009.Until now I haven't get my result yet.I am so anxious and scare. It's shut off @ 75.They were 1 SATA,1 fill in blank, more than 6 meds, and lot of delegation and priority.I am just pray and crossing my finger for myself and of course for you, too.":heartbeat

Hi there! I found out yesterday, I didn't made it. I just got my big brown envelope yesterday in the a mail. I really don't know how reliable the trick is with the Pearsonvue but it did help me pass my anxiety, with the trick I was sort of prepared for the big finale...so I already had cried out and all worked up. So finally, when I got my performance eval. report yesterday...I was calm and more reasonable to deal with. I really had it tough with my test. I had alot of SATA questions and 4 calculations. I didn't have psych nor maternal nsgs. I had a question for vaccination (peds) and the rest were all MS. Which was tolerable until I came across the SATA questions. It was mind-blowing. But anyhow I did have my test result and I found out that I have 3 that were below the passing standard which includes the management of care, reduction of risk potential, and health promotion and maintenance, the rest of the 5 categories were all near the passing standard. Do you know how to analyze and remedy this test peformance eval. of mine? if not it's fine. However, I'll surely get back on it...I'll try to reapply this wednesday and hopefully I won't have any problems with my application and so I can get back taking the test again one more time. I surely do hope that i'll make it next time.

Now, let's get back to you...I understand that your test stopped at 75 questions like mine, and that you were really anxious and scared, and you haven't gotten you test result yet. My friend, my prayers are to you as well. I hope you made it. I'm sure you've prepared quite much. And I pray that you've accomplish your goal. Hey! I'm here for you okay! Tell me about it. Anyhow, like I said, i wish you well. Keep a smile on your face okay and I'll cross my fingers and my toes here for you as well...:p Keep cool and relaxed. Alryt?!!!1_114286610m.jpg

:heartbeat"Did you try the pearson vue trick?:redbeathe":heartbeat

Hi there! Yes I did. Last Friday. So I was kinda prepared with the whole FAIL thing...I was bawling to death...frustration was just ove me and I couldn't think straight. I looked up my name in the Ohio website and I wasn't in there. My heart just skipped a bit and I just lost it. I was totally bummed. I did finally got the Big Brown Envelope with the Performance Test Report yesterday in the mail...that's how fast it is here in ohio. Exactly 48Hrs. but thanks to the pearsonvue trick here in the website, I've managed to be more calmer and more reasonable to deal with...I've finally made peace with myself then, so yup, I'm not giving up. I'm going to study, and study, more harder than I've had. I'll try to focus on my weakness and ofcourse brush on again with the onces I've reviewed. It sounds really tiresome, but like what our friends here in the website have said...."NEVER QUIT!", right? So ill try to reapply this wednesday, and get all my paperworks straighten out and head from there. I'll start studying again next week, and hopefully get my study plan on track...that is if I don't lose my mind...coz honestly I'm ready too...:banghead:hehehe! Do you have any suggestions for me to try to prepare on for this exam? Can you help me analyze my test report...quite frankly I really don't know how to analyze it that much nor how to remedy it the way it's supposed to be so I can do a better job next. My test report showed that I have 3 below the passing standard which includes the management of care, reduction of risk potential, and health promotion and maintenance. All the other 5 categories were near the passing standard. I do believe that I had a hard time taking on my drug and 4 calculation problems in my test and had quite a no. of SATA questions which was quite confusing. Those were the only parts on my last test that made me want to blow off my mind. I didn't have any psych nor maternal nsg. problems but I did have quite a few of MS and Peds that wasn't too hard. However, the SATA's were really hard. Do you have any suggestions for me to remedy my test report? CAn you help me? If it's not too much to ask.. if not, it's fine. I thank you for taking the time to respond to me. I truly appreciate it.

Sincerely,

Marie

:heartbeat"So sorry to hear you did not make it @ your second attempt. Just relax and stay calm when next you schedule to take the test. Failing NCLEX exam is not end of your career. Buckle up and study your weakest area. Better still go over your content and make sure you understand what the question is asking you. Do practise in test mode, that way you will keep track of your score and never cram for such exam because it will do no good craming. If you have access to KAPLAN strategy, it will raelly help on how to answer question. wish you all the best in your upcoming test. Pm/email me i have study software to share with you.:typing:D":heartbeat

Hello there! Thank you so much for taking the time to respond to my thread. I truly appreciate it. I will surely take on to what you have said...I will surely try to be more relax and calmer as I'll take on my next exam. I just got my big brown envelope yesterday and finally have read my performance eval. report. I found out i have 3 that were below the passing standard and those were the management of care, reduction or risk potential, and health promotion and maintenance...and the other 5 cat. were near the passing standard. Do you know how to read and remedy this evaluation report? Just wondering. If not it's fine. I do believe that I had a hard time with Pharmacology (drugs and calculation) and with the SATA questions in regards to prioritization and delegation so as leadership and management. I'll surely try to get back on those areas however I do hope somebody could help me understand my status with my test report it's kinda confusing in a way. But like I said, I won't give up...I'll try to reapply again this wednesday, and head from there. And try to get my study plan next week on track so I can study again and prepare for the test. I do have that Kaplan strategy book, and i will surely brush back on that one. I am really glad that you have taken the time to IM me here in the website. I truly appreciate it for you for trying to help me out. You don't know how much I'm truly happy that they've made this website....it has given me so much encouragement and confidence...and hope. And again, thank you thank you for being a friend and a support system for right now esp. now. I truly am grateful. Thank you.

Hi there! Thank you very much for sending my IM. I truly appreciate it. And thank you for the words of encouragement. I truly needed that today, and again, thank you. I truly do hope so. And I've heard your taking on your exam two weeks from now, well I wish you the best and with your hardwork and perservance I know you will make it. I'll be here supporting and praying for you too. My best wishes goes out to you. Keep believing and keep a positive-mind, I keep on telling that myself too...hehehe but really just keep a positive frame of mind and you will pass. I'm quite sure...if not, well take it from me. Never quite! But let's not think about that...nor worry about it. Right now...Go and nail that test! I know you can do it. Goodluck and best wishes! You can do it. Believe in yourself.

There is one more thing I forgot to say to you. Remember to make this event (the next test) a private one. Don't go around sharing the date of your test and advertising to everyone your drama with the NCLEX. Other people will only compound your anxiety and it will not help you. Share it only with special friends who will "really" support you. Don't tell anyone the date of your test. The other thing is not to make this event larger than it is. Remember all the worries, drama, problems are fabrications of our own expectations and hopes and nothing more. Remember that is just a stupid computer with some questions and you just have to get it right. You are young and eventually will get it right: that's all you need to know. THIS IS A PASSABLE TEST AND I WILL PASS keep this in mind. We are all in this together. Think that you will be a nurse prepared to deal with that much more difficulty when you hit the floor. Think of it as a opportunity (I think I'm repeating myself here but repetition is key).

Hi! I'm from Cebu too. Just arrived in PA last Feb 2009 and got married. Took my 1st NCLEX last March 2009. So, I took it unprepared. Though I was hoping I passed with only 75 questions. Unfortunately, it didn't happen. I just resent my papers to Vermont to retake the exam. So, I'll hear from them maybe the end of this month. Though I've been answering some practice questions, I'm just so lazy to read Saunders again. I'm hoping to get some tips to those who are RN's already. Or to those 2nd timers who took the exam and passed. Hope you could help me too.

NCLEX ABCDZ STRATEGY

A. Spend 1/3 of your time reviewing content you don't understand

B. Spend 2/3 of your time answering test question

C. Used most comfortable NCLEX review book for content.

D. Begin with the area that is most difficult for you or area that are least familiar

E. Use a good nursing reference manual or internet to find information

F. Define the disease in terms of pathophysiological process and understand the disease process.

G. Identify the early and late symptoms of disease

H. Identify most important or life-threatening complication associated with the disease.

I. Define the medical treatment.

J. Identify nursing intervention associate with early and late symptom of disease process

K. Identify what to teach patient and family to prevent in other to adapt to disease process.

L. list the area you need to review.

M. Answering question in a test mode will improve your test taking skills

N. Each time you answer question, check the number of question you answered correctly that will motivate you to read and study more next time.

O. Keep track of your score to see how you're improving in all area of your content.

P. If you answer less than 65% correctly, these is a WARNING SIGNAL!! Spend lots of time reviewing content and stop doing question on the weakest area

Q. If you answer 65-75% correctly your performance is improving and success is certain. Continue working with the content until your score is above 75%

R. Every wrong answer, identify why you answered it wrongly.

S. Practice 75- 85 question to known how you'll be prepared for NCLEX Exam and see how many you answered correctly

T. Do understand the question first, formulate your answer of hand and compare with the option given to see how close your answer!!

U. Anticipate Test question will increase in difficulty when you get the first question right!!

V. Do not panic if someone finishes before you!!

W. Do not CRAM CRAM!!

X. Remember that you have learned a great amount of nursing knowledge and the exam is only designed to determine whether you're able to practice safely @ entry level

Y. Keep a positive attitude and Pray!!

Z. Wish you all best of LUCK

Great Advice:yeah:

Hi sweety! Welcome to the United States. I sort of replied earlier to your post/msg however I sort of written it in our dialect I didn't know it's not allowed here so it got deleted. That was my bad! I truly didn't know that wasn't allowed and I do understand why the moderator did it. Anyhow. I'm using saunders too...and gauwitz and prentice hall's nclex rn so as the book from la charity (prioritzation, delegation, and assignment). The students in here also had suggested to use mosby and lippincott since those books have higher level Q and A's so I'll try to practice on them now as well starting this week I'll get my study plan organized. I'll reapply for the boards this wednesday I'm just trying to get all my paperworks straighten up. I know it is must be tiresome to read the saunder's book I said the same thing before it was quite overwhelming but actually I was surprise that I finished it reading...well sad to say I didn't made it to pass on my 2nd try but I'll surely try again next time and this time I'll practice higher level board questions like what they have suggested to me esp. la charity's prioritization, delegation, and assignment book coz most of my SATA questions were kinda like here practice questions in the book.

By the way, where at PA are u at? I have a friend that lives there and so as an aunt it its actually a 4 hr drive for us from here to PA. And why you registering at Vermont? not in PA? just wondering? Anyhow I hope to hear from you soon. I'm glad you posted here in this tread online. Take care ganda!!!

Hey sis! I applied for Vermont when I was still working in Cebu. So by the time I left, I already had my exam date. I still filed for Vermont the 2nd time, though if I get licensed, I dunno what to do. Maybe we should consider moving to VT. Haha! I wish that VT and PA participated on the Nursing Licensure Compact so that I wouldn't have much problems with it.

Anyways, I asked my hubby how far Ohio is from here and he said that it's a 6-hour drive. I'm living in a small city named HAZLETON. I had the La Charity book (had it photocopied) before I left since the review center that I enrolled in was talking much about it. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to read it because I was so busy when I got here and then I only have a month left before I need to sit for the NCLEX.

I'm glad to meet you here. By the way, where in Cebu do you live?
