I hope this doesn't offend anyone...

I hope this post doesn't offend anyone, it's an account of something that happened recently that I found really inappropriate. I'm so disgusted.

A patient who had a foley kept yelling that his "dinky" hurt. The nurse taking care of him said she hated the word "dinky" and was trying to teach him to say "wang" instead.

Can someone please tell me that I'm overreacting. This is really bothering me because I think it's completely unprofessional.

Thanks for letting me vent.

I think "wang" is more disgusting than "dinky" . . . . . sheesh.

How about using what my husband calls it "tallywacker"? At least that is funny. :)

I had a LOL tell me she needed to wash her box. I'm looking around the room for a box, wondering "what the....she was with it last time I was in here" She watched me for a few minutes, then enlightened me that she just needed a wash cloth to clean up "down there." She couldn't believe I didn't know what a "box" was!!! :imbar

I understand what you are saying and yes, it would get to me too if a nurse was wasting time on a linguistics lesson rather than focus on a pain management issue.

Mark, hope you can get out of there. Wichita is a GREAT place!! I was up there a few years ago. The Cosmosphere is amazing (you all probably may not know that the entire Apollo 13 capsule is housed in this museum near Wichita, in Hutchinson, KS!!!) It was awesome to go see. It's a great place, just hope that aviation stays on the rebound.

Good luck to you, whatever you decide!

Thanks for responding!

I haven't been to Hutch for years! I spent a little time in the Hays and Colby areas (there's not a whole lot out there), so used to travel around and see different parts of the state. The most I've ever seen of Wichita though is driving by doing about 80 mph. It sounds like it's something to see!

I've never heard the word 'wang' .

As far as the nurse correcting a pt., I don't think it's our place to do that. I suppose 'wang' is another slang word for member? Dinky is kind of on par with 'weiner', correct? Both are rather childish words that insinuate diminuative size in my mind, such as one might find in a pre-pubecent boy.

I agree. It's pretty sad that this exchange occurred between two adults. I don't generally hear any of these terms unless it's coming from my teenage nieces or nephews.

Mystery, you did give me a good laugh when you said "Dinky is kind of on par with 'weiner', correct?" :rotfl:

Isn't it lovely when people use complately inappropriate terminology and then are annoyed by US when we don't know what they are rambling about?

WANG?

ok  :chuckle

LOL, it must be a regional thing. Actually, it sorta sounds Chinese...

I notice the OP is Canadian, it's probably a Cannuck term...

The Polish slang for member is 'hoowee' btw. I can't provide the spelling because some of the letters are pecular to Polish.

Actually I first heard it when working in the US. I think it was on a movie...

While I would be the last to even consider hi-jacking this thread to a list of nicknames for a member, I must say that what a man calls his johnson is his business. (Well, maybe not the last).

The sad part, of course, is that the trivia was siezed upon, while the actual nursing issue was ignored. Maybe the pain relief was the incentive to say wang? Say the secret word, get an intervention! Who says healthcare can't be fun.

On a sort of (at least in my mind) related note, when my Dad was in the hospital, a few years ago, his nurse addressed him as "Boomer." I thought it was sort of cute and flirty and he really didn't mind, but I was working in the hospital by then and had been taught not to call patients "Honey" or "Sweetie," and I noticed that she called all of her older male patients "Boomer."

I try to make it my practice to use Sir or Ma'am, Mr or Ms, and to refer to body parts by their correct anatomical name. I don't know--it just seems more professional.

Nope...not Canadian....I've lived here a long time and managed not to hear it . Thank goodness. What a dumb word. :chuckle
