I hope this doesn't offend anyone...

I hope this post doesn't offend anyone, it's an account of something that happened recently that I found really inappropriate. I'm so disgusted.

A patient who had a foley kept yelling that his "dinky" hurt. The nurse taking care of him said she hated the word "dinky" and was trying to teach him to say "wang" instead.

Can someone please tell me that I'm overreacting. This is really bothering me because I think it's completely unprofessional.

Thanks for letting me vent.

In the correct circumstances, slang (if humor is appropriate) might lessen stress.

I myself might use a slang if it were my own family member, not someone else's family member.

As for silly names, yes we know that dogs are really man's second best friend. So some men have fun with naming old George.

My boyfriend's name is Richard - He often gets called Dick

His father is Rodney - Rod

And his grandfather is Axle.

The part they all laugh about is their last name is Johnson.

My step-mom is a mammography tech. - She says ladies have all kinds of names for the girls. Sometimes its a stress reliever for the ladies.

A client's individuality & uniqueness should be respected & acknowledged at all times. No matter how he refers to it as "dinky" , it doesn't matter if he calls it by any other name. What's more important is that he was able to tell what that something pains him. Clients have the right to express what they feel & how they say it shouldn't matter, so long as they are communicating. :nurse:

Yes it is unprofessional and ridiculous! Did this nurse taking care of that pt.

investigate the reason for the pain? I can't understand how a nurse can be

so concerned w/ what a pt. calls his member, and then try to teach him to call it something else, how stupid and ridiculous! These are the type of nurses

that give the whole profession a bad image, no wonder nurses are not always considered professional! Maybe someone should tell her how incompetent and inappropiate that assessment was, she should have ignored what he called his anatomy and addressed the issue of pain! :angryfire
