I hope this doesn't offend anyone...

I hope this post doesn't offend anyone, it's an account of something that happened recently that I found really inappropriate. I'm so disgusted.

A patient who had a foley kept yelling that his "dinky" hurt. The nurse taking care of him said she hated the word "dinky" and was trying to teach him to say "wang" instead.

Can someone please tell me that I'm overreacting. This is really bothering me because I think it's completely unprofessional.

Thanks for letting me vent.

Sounds like stress has a good hold on you today. Please, take a few minutes to unwind. I wish you a better shift the next time you work.

It's everyday! lol

Nursing practice in my neck of the woods is...interesting. That's why I'll be moving on. Usually I just try to leave this stuff at work.

Thanks for the good wishes.

Like Oprah used to say all the time "If you get mad about something like socks on the floor, there's something more going on!" Sounds to me like any little straw at this point will break the camel's back for you. You sound frustrated all the way around.

I think you hit the nail on the head. I lived and worked in KS back in 1996-97. Those were peaceful days for us, and we consider going back. We have a good friend that lives not too far from Wichita.

I hope you guys find some more peaceful days, wherever you end up!! Just don't come looking at my hospital, I'm in the same boat as you.

Geez, I hope your situation improves then too. My friend was mentioning the Galatia Group (spelling?) in Wichita. She heard it was a decent place.

I feel bad for bothering all you guys now. I probably just need a change.

It just really bothers me that she didn't address his problem, and that she was more concerned about her personal preferences than her patient.

Here you've nailed it. This is what I meant as well. It was all about HER. :stone

That's really sad.

And therefor I can empathize with your frustrations. It would bug me, too.

Hope things turn around for you.. for the BETTER ! :D

And don't feel like you're "bothering" anyone.. vent all you need to.. WE do! :rotfl:

Thanks Jnette. I appreciate it! :)

Galicia. Yes, it's a private hospital run by Joseph Galicia and his croneys. It's a heart hospital. Personally, I don't like the Galicia group as a whole, but they have very decent working conditions and benefits from what I've heard. I've heard talk of another private hospital opening in Andover sometime in the future, being pegged as very high-tech.

There's also the Kansas Heart Hospital in Wichita. Another private place. Very, very low turnover. 1:4 ratio max. Now, that group of Docs I like.

I'll have to pass along this info. She just mentioned that they were really looking for nurses.

We'll have to look into this a little more. I like cardiac, and I'm definitely looking for something decent! lol Thanks for the info!

And I don't think it's appropriate to "teach" a patient a new slang word like "wang" It's a little on the disqusting side. I agree that using the appropriate term and dealing with the underlying problem is the answer.

I think "wang" is more disgusting than "dinky" . . . . . sheesh.

How about using what my husband calls it "tallywacker"? At least that is funny. :)

On a serious note, the pain needed to be addressed, not the terminology. It isn't our place to correct what may be years of habit of naming body parts.

And a member is just a member so that's what I call it.

steph

I understand what you are saying and yes, it would get to me too if a nurse was wasting time on a linguistics lesson rather than focus on a pain management issue.

Mark, hope you can get out of there. Wichita is a GREAT place!! I was up there a few years ago. The Cosmosphere is amazing (you all probably may not know that the entire Apollo 13 capsule is housed in this museum near Wichita, in Hutchinson, KS!!!) It was awesome to go see. It's a great place, just hope that aviation stays on the rebound.

Good luck to you, whatever you decide!
