I hate it when the male nurses on my unit...

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I hate when the male nurses on my unit refuse to work with female patients b/c they are a "man" and "the patient won't be comfortable working with a man." If the patient isn't comfortable, I'm pretty sure that she will say so! They keep doing this, and I want to say so badly, "Are you sure it's not you that's uncomfortable? I mean, you did know that you would be working with women, too, when you went to nursing school?" And every night, the charge nurse ends up assigning all the male patients with the male nurses, and sometimes they end up with less patients b/c there aren't enough male patients for the male nurses to have the same amount of patients as everyone else. This is rediculous:banghead:. Okay....I'm done:yawn:. Whew...Carry on!

I've never encountered that.

i have encountered this several times...most nurses are willing to pull their share of the load

however you should not be allowing this to happen..you need to submit a written report and give copies to the supervisr and to her superior

you are representing not only yourself but all the other nurses also

This problem seems to be related to the unique culture of your unit. Management should address it, and the male nurse should be put in his place. I have never heard that assignments should be made according to employee gender?? Totally crazy.

All I can say is ask the pt who says, "He touched me inappropriately" when nothing of the sort occurred. People want to sue hospitals for everything, why not easily make up a bogus charge against a male - and likely, the pt will be believed over the nurse, especially if you're not particularly fond of this nurse - the gossip becomes reality.

No thanks

Oh and the thread title is screaming for arguments.

Occassionally one of the male nurses will ask a female to cath a female patient of theirs or something else that's personal, but they also offer to do the same for a female nurse's male patients.

This is our approach.

So, are you saying that you agree with these guys? If someone is that paranoid about working with female patients, then maybe nursing isn't for him. A patient could just as easily falsely accuse someone of hitting them, or abusing them in any way.

Note that I said "on my unit." This is in no way intended to attack the entire male nurse population. That's absurd.

I remember way back in the day, 36 yrs ago. I had a male student nurse for my labor and delivery. He was the BEST most compassionate nurse on the unit and I may have been the worst patient. 20 yrs old and totally unprepared. Ending up with a C section after a very long and difficult labor.

Gee, I wonder what would happen if all the female nurses said they weren't comfortable with caring for male patients? Hospital care would collapse. It's not an excuse for a female, it should not be an excuse for a male, unless the patient specifically declines.

When it comes right down to it, the same accusation could be made by a female or a male patient against a female nurse.

When exactly does that ever happen?
