I got dismissed from Nursing program at west coast university I need help!!

Published

I used to be one of a nursing students in West Coast University in Los Angeles Area a year ago. Due to my family and health problem I got dismissed from West coast. I appealed my dismissal and I got denied. I was so hurt emotionally, and in bad economy financially, so desperately tried to find a way to get back to school again. I saw the executive director and asked for his wise help he told me "provide some improvements that I can show the community your progressions". I couldn't provide him anything in a short time. He said may you can appeal your grade and I did, but no chance on appealing grade. I left with no hope and losing of thousands of Dollars. After a while I thought why should I cry I should get help to get back on my feet.

During my dismissal situation from West Coast University last year I decided not to lose my faith. I have tried my best to make improvements in my weak areas because I have dreamed of becoming a nurse. I value the profession and I am determined to be an outstanding member. Even though my life has taken a few twists and turns, I have never lost my strong desire to spend my life caring for people, to make a difference in their lives, to be a nurse.

As I studied the new version of the 2012-2013 catalogs on their website I became so happy that I still have a chance to follow my dream in West Coast University as a BSN student again. I've noticed there is a section that meets my need as follows:

"Reinstatement Process for Students with No Appeal or Denied Appeals"

A year ago I got academically dismissed for not making satisfactory progress, and I know in order to qualify for reinstatement, I must provide documentation that the issues that led me to dismissal have been resolved. During this past year, I got my nursing assistant and home health certificate after completing CNA (160 Hrs) and HHA (40 Hrs) and I've passed seventeen units at two semesters in a College. I applied for associate degree in Social Behavioral and Science in a College, and they've already evaluated my transcript and it will take some time for processing documentation. After that, hopefully I will be graduated on March 2013. I hired a private English professional for my reading and writing to work on my English professions, and even took some therapy session with a skilled therapist who helped me find ways to deal with stress in my life and taught me skills to manage my anxiety and stressful situations.

So, I made these changes to improve and focus more on my studies.I tried to found out if I still have the chance because I heard they do accept student in my situation after one semester and reinstate them again. But my bad luck in West Coast is continuing Mr. executive send me letter that: "I'm afraid that I don't have the news you are seeking. You have exhausted the appeals processes at WCU during your dismissal, both inappealing to have our grade changed and in appealing to be reinstated. That decision was final." which I do not understand his writing. this is my right to study there after one year passed more than one semester. I think he is prejudiced and doesn't want me to continue my education there.

I need your help if anyone has any suggestion about my problem. should I hire any attorney for this matter or not?? Please help me with your advice..

While I do understand the financial outlay already at stake, the harsh reality is YOU'RE NOT GETTING BACK IN THERE.

Why all caps? Because if I were in front of you, that would be me raising my voice to emphasize that you are DONE at that school. They are not allowing you back, period. Even if a lawyer were to find a way to force them to do so......YOU WILL NOT GRADUATE FROM THAT SCHOOL!

More emphasis.

Time to collect what you can from this experience and find another school. See how much of what you've completed can transfer, and go from there.

You will NEVER be a graduate of this school.

First you should thank them for saving you thousands of dollars when they let you go!!!!! So now you can get yourself together physically and emotionally because you weren't ready. Yes, I know it's your dream to become a nurse but you have too much going on. Don't take this time off beating yourself up on what you could have, should have done take this time to get yourself together so you can be ready for the next go round!!

Based on what you write, you were not discriminated against because of your race, gender, religion, or any other protected class. You were dismissed for inadequate academic performance: you didn't make the grades you needed to.

Is it fair? Not always.

Is it illegal? No, since the school made it clear up front what was expected of you and you didn't meet that expectation

Will a lawyer help you here? Very doubtful.

I agree with the other posters: it's clear that they're not going to reinstate you, and to keep fighting--and throwing more money at the problem--isn't going to change their mind. As much as it hurts to lose what you invested in it, you're better off moving on to another school.

Best of luck in the future.

You have nothing to worry about. Everything happened for a reason. I am in the same nursing program where the Director of the program and the Retention Committee will determine who will graduate or who will be dismissed. I have seen many innocent, smart, and intelligent students dismissed because of the color of their skin or their nationality. I have heard stories of students being dismissed simply because the Director and some faculty members don't just like them. I have seen some faculty members literally help out the students who are considered their favorites and others are compelled to fail or dismissed. I have seen a student dismissed for having 81.5 instead of 82, while others are being assisted.

We live in a strange world with people who have no conscience. But I am a firm believer in the law of Karma. What goes around comes around. Somehow, the consequences will come on such unscrupulous faculty members. It might be few years down the road, but it will come. So dear, cheer up!! Don't be discourage and stand tall. Whatever has been destined for you by God can never pass by. It will only take few more years and you will graduate as a nurse and nobody can stop that. Once there is life, there is definitely hope. Cheerup!!

Unfortunately, you really don't have any recourse here. Bottom line...you had poor academic performance. I can tell from your post that you struggle with English & grammar. That can be a serious hindrance to your academic performance. You have to be proficient in the language to perform at an acceptable level. While some schools will allow you to appeal based on home/life issues, it doesn't seem from what you've explained here that it had any bearing on your actual grades. And if your home/life issues were self inflicted, then you really don't have a good reason to be reinstated. The school does not have to let you back in.

I would suggest you work on improving your language & grammar skills and try to find another program.
