I am giving up

Published

I think I am going to give up my dream of becoming a nurse. Everyone keeps telling me how hard it is. That it is the hardest thing I will do in my life. So people pretty much scared me. I haven't been in a classroom in a few years. And I am also the mother of two which is even harder. I don't know what to do. Nursing is the career I want and desire. I want to be able to provide my children with a better life. I am so lost and confused.

You'll turn your dreams into tangible realities if you want them badly enough.

In other words, don't lose sleep over what other people say. Don't give up. Don't allow others to win the game by discouraging you. It's time for you to come out on top and convince oneself that this feat can be accomplished.

If you want it bad enough you WILL find a way, but this isn't going to be a walk in the park. There will be sacrifices, let downs, disappointments, doubts, fears...if you are mentally and emotionally equipped to deal with this roller coaster (nursing school) you will get through.

I went through nursing school with two small children. I now have four children and I'm going to school again to further my career.

Please don't.

It's one thing to hear opinions. And another to be around negative people.

Studying, is hard for everything. Same thing here.

But, how will you know until you try? Nursing is not easy but it is not impossible. You've taken yourself out of the race before the race even started. Have some confidence in yourself. If this is what you truly want you will do what you need to do to get there. Maybe that means finding a tutor, or having someone else watch the kids so you have time to study. Many have done this, in similar circumstances, and you can do it too if you work hard.

Take the first step. If you let others discourage you from your dream you may regret not pursuing it.

I heard all of that same talk about how hard it was going to be and it was all very discouraging. Yes, it's hard. Impossible? NO! I went back to school after 8 years of doing things on my own with no college education and I was successful because it was what I wanted to accomplish.

Don't let what others say defeat you. If this is what you want, make it happen. It may not be easy, but if this is what you want, you'll find a way. Don't think that only those without personal hardships, whatever they may be, can get through nursing school. We had older students in their 40s and 50s, single parents, international students who struggled with language/culture differences, students who had re-entered the program after failing previously. Know what they all have in common now? They can all write RN after their name!

The whole thing about being a nurse is that you will be able to provide a good future for your 2 kids... yeah it might be real hard to get through the program, but its for you and your children.

What would you want your children to do if they were in your situation right now? Keep moving on toward your dreams. Hold yourself accountable as you would your children.

Don't give up!! Don't let other people discourage you! I too haven't been in a classroom in a while and I also have two kids(2yrs. and 9mos.). I dream of being a nurse, I want it so bad. I want my kids to have a good future and to be able to go to college. I just started my first class last week and guess what?? I did awesome! I was actually helping other people understand the material. And you can too. I know you can. When other people tell me how hard nursing school is, it just puts fuel on fire. I want it even more and become even more driven to prove them wrong. You're also showing your kids that school is important and mommy's happiness is important too. You'll never regret getting an education. But you will regret not getting one. Go to a school and sign up for classes. Take as many classes online as you can. Go part time while getting your pre-req's so you can learn the material well and not get overwhelmed. Slow and steady wins the race. Figure out a plan and practice affirmations. Visualize yourself the day you pass the state board exam. I do this everyday. It works. Walt Disney went to over two hundred banks before he was approved to get a loan to build Disney World. Henry Ford went bankrupt twice before he was able to achieve his dream. Preserver and you shall win!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Like others have said, it may be hard but not impossible. I think people arent trying to set you up for failure, but letting you know up front how hard you will have to work to succeed. You will be tested physically, mentally, and emotionally. Anyone can succeed when they go into it knowing these facts that cause many nurses and nursing students to run for the hills when they get into it because they have this romanticized view of what nurses do and think its ONLY giving a pill or fluffing a pillow and getting paid the 'big bucks' to do so. But you CAN do it, just concentrate on one small step at a time. Small steps turn into big steps which turn into succeeding at your goals. I know its hard not to think about the ultimate goal but set aside some smaller ones that dont look so hard to accomplish, such as getting good marks on tests in prereqs. No one will give you any task that is impossible, and you can do anything you set your mind to. You ARE a student now, so be a student, dont well on tests and you'll slowly reach your goals. Dont give up because I think you'll really suprise yourself at what you can accomplish!! :loveya:

If nursing school were impossible, there would be no nurses....

I'm a 30-ish :) mom of four who is about to graduate in Dec. In addition, my husband and I take care of my disabled in-laws who live with us. School has not been easy, but you CAN do it. You will make it by putting one foot in front of the other and taking one day at a time. You hear stories about nurses eating their young, but I swear it can't be any worse than what some upperclass nursing students do to beginners with all the scare tactics and gossip. You are in charge of you, and quitting before you even start is just letting others control your life. Don't live your life based on fear or let anyone EVER make decisions for you! I've done a lot of things in my life, but nothing compares to the feeling I have from surviving this. I wouldn't trade anything for the example I'm setting for my children. Work hard, pay attention, and screw everybody else.

Conformity is boring..... ;)

DON'T give up your dream to be a nurse.... It will be a challenge, but worth it. You can do this. I was told that I would never get my GED or learn how to drive a stick shift. But, I did learn how to drive the stick shift, I did get my GED, I did get my LPN and I did get my RN. and I will get what ever else I set out to do. I won't be a cake walk. It woun't be easy. But what is really? You will need a support system. Start getting that into place and take some classes. If you have a problem, we will try to help you with it. DOn'T give up your dream...
