I GIVE UP~

Published

First, let me say thank you to everyone who has been there for me through this ordeal; your support has been price-

less.

I have decided to GIVE UP!!!!!!!!!

I can't take another 8-9 pages of articles to read, summarize and 'discuss' in

addition to the reports, group reports, 5-6 chapters to try to make sense of

for each test, the charts, etc and still try to at least read and understand my APII chapters.

The class I'm referring to is micro, which is being taught at the scientist level.

I have cried, worked, studied, cried, vented, reached out for the instructor's

help, All to no avail.

I'm just not willing to sacrifice my sanity, my life, nor my GPA for this insanity.

I am already a LVN; I guess I just have to be happy with that.

I am new here, but I am really sorry to hear you are giving up a dream of becoming a nurse. Some of the courses frighten me a little (like CHM), but in the long run nursing is a dream I have to full fill. As embarrassing as it is for me to type this, I had to take College Alegebra three times in order to pass. And the only reason I did was because I had an awesome tutor that worked with me for 15 hours a week. It was hard work. That was all five years ago now and here I am back in school to finish up and get into nursing. Maybe you need a break. I took one and a little too long at that (but I wanted to take time to enjoy my babies that I had in the meantime). Now, I feel that even the roadblocks are not going to hold me back.

I also suggest using ratemyprofessor.com or even google the professor. I have done that for all the courses and while it is tedious work, I will not take a course with a difficult instructor. At times, it has NOTHING at all to do with whether you are fully capable of passing the class. It sometimes lies all within that professor.

Good luck

TO ALL,

How can I express my gratitude for your kind words, caring, and compassion!!

See, to me, that's what nursing really IS; not a lot of unnecessary, tough, "Ph D" research-level info that I will Never have to explain to a patient!

You guys have given me a much needed confidence booster.

Yes, this is my dream, it is in my heart and I think I'd like to try to take it online

but I don't know where to start? This person is our Only choice at our cc so I

really would like some suggestions on where/how to take it online.

Boy, talk about turning things around:) Yes, I will try again, thanks to all of you!!

I had a Chemistry teacher that taught us the info as if we were all people with doctrate degrees in Chem and this was the most basic of chem classes ! Sounds a lot like what you are going through.

This person teaching you Micro might be the only one at the CC you are going to but you CAN take it somewhere else and transfer the credit. On line science courses are tough for a lot of people. I am one of those people, I need to listen to the words being spoken in order to absorb it, I cannot just read and get it to sink in. Just something to think about.

I would highly suggest finding another school to take the course at. If there isn't on thats an option for you, check with your school and see what they suggest in terms of online courses that are available either through them or online classes they will take if they don't offer any.

Don't let this one class end your dream. I am still dreading taking Chem again (I withdrew before it ruined my GPA) but I won't let that one class stop me from going from LPN to RN and don't you let it do it to you either!!

Blah! I hated micro. My sympathies are with you.

Many instructors will say that C students make the best nurses as--when we are nurses--it is our people skills and thinking on our feet that we use the most. And people who do great academically don't always have those skills and tend to drop out of the profession early. So those of us who don't get great grades now might be doing great once we're out there. :)

Is there another college in a neighboring county? Maybe you can take it there and transfer it in. It's worth a try! It may cost a little more, but it would be worth it. Or maybe a university? You may have to drive but it would be worth it. Check with your college and see what they accept.

Excelsior college offers micro, it's 3 credits. Check and see if your CC will accept Excelsior credits. They may want you to take only their course, but I'd check it out anyway.

Thanks to all of you so much:)

Debanam, they won't take Excelsior and unfortunately, she is the only person that

teaches micro.

I am going to start looking into finding a class online. I am a lot like like you, CT Pixie,

I need to hear the words and have them explained at my level; you know, an

Intro course:) and not like I'm a Phd!

I really appreciate all the support you guys have given me and, kreaglin100,

boy, did you cheer me up!! I have never heard that before about C nurses:)

Does anyone know of an online Micro course? As soon as I can get this info,

I'm going to drop this class like a hot potato and start over but this time, I know

I'll make it because of all the support you wonderful nurses and my husband are

giving me.

You are the best, all of you:)!!!

AFranklin,

I am so sorry you are going through this. I have been reading your posts from time to time about this wretched course you are in. I wish you had dropped it when you were first considering it and saved yourself the trouble of having to keep going through this. Is there anyway you could speak to someone about her teaching style? I minored in Biology in college and tutored it and I have never, ever heard of any 100/200 level biology courses demanding so much of their students. I took Genetics (a supped up version of Micro) my junior year and it in terms of the subject matter most students considered it to be the hardest class in the department and he had nowhere near the amount of work you are required to do. If fact in my major, History, my research-intensive senior capstone course was nowhere near what you have had to do. I have simply been astounded by your posts to tell you the truth. Sounds like you have put as much time into this class as you would a full time job!!!!! And that's rediculous. The school's administration should be informed that this teacher is teaching above the scope of an entry-level course---it's entry level for a reason. No one can be expected to do that amount of work unless they are in a 400-level course with previous exposure in entry-level and mid-level courses. That's why the classes are tiered to begin with!!!!

Please don't let one rotten apple ruin your dream.

I'm glad to hear you turned around! I have been following your posts about this professor/course and was astounded at what you've been put through in an entry level course. Seriously. PLEASE don't let this one "teacher" ruin your dream!! I wish you the best of luck! :)

I would check with the school to see what online classes they accept. Worse case, take the class until you pass. It's expensive, I know, but that may be your only option. And remember, C = RN.

Thanks to all of you so much:)

Sorry this happened but I don't think I'd stay in the course either. 5-6 chapter assignments plus papers sound a bit too much for me. For my A&P and Chem classes we basically did two chapters then exam. So a lot of exams per semester but imo it makes the workload more manageable. Look at other cc's in your area. When looking at courses I look for online or any campus within driving distance if hybrid or weekend options are available.

I am sorry you feel this way but please don't give up. may be you need to take it with a different professor. micro is not as you described it at all. i am telling you this because my micro class was very fun and it was not bad at all. you can do it and just because of one class you don't need to give up on your RN.
