I didn't get into any BSN programs, but I got into the ADN programs...am I stupid?

Published

I was rejected by all BSN programs. To find out why I was rejected, they said my grades (4.0) and TEAs (98%) test were excellent; however, they said I failed my interview for all 5 schools!

However, since most of the ADN programs do not require an interview, I got in most of them. I'm very fluent in english and I speak very articulate. I just don't know how I didn't get admitted into the BSN program.

My main reason for entering nursing was to provide care for the less unfortunate overseas in the Peace Corps. I don't think the Peace Corps accepts associate degree graduates. But do they?

Doesn't this delay my time to enter the Peace Corps since I have to do the ADN program (2 years) then the RN-BSN (2 years)? Because the BSN programs in my area are only 2 year trimester system. I'm only 19, please help! I feel so stupid by not transferring to a university, now people are going to perceive me as some dumb community college student. I may seem immature about this; however, my parents held me to a high standard of going to a university for my nursing degree. They don't really understand how the diploma/ADN/BSN situation works. Why is nursing such a brutal process of applying as opposed to engineering, accounting, and other fields!

With that attitude, maybe thats why you were not accepted into the BSN program. Don't be so judgmental. You will be a RN regardless where you obtained your degree. There are ADN to BSN programs after you complete your ADN. ( In my town, there is a competitive six month course from ADN to BSN)

Besides, it takes approximately 4 years (2 years pre reqs and 2 years nursing program) to obtain ADN. So don't think of it as just a "associates degree".

As offensive as I find the "dumb community college student" part, I can sort of understand where the person is coming from, even if they are completely misguided.

I graduated from a well respected public university with a BA in another field. I too had been brainwashed when I was younger about 4 year universities being better than community colleges. When I enrolled at my community college now, it took me about a week to get over myself and my ego and accept that I was getting a great education from a great school for a WHOLE LOT LESS MONEY.

I could have gone back to my alma mater for a BSN, but I chose my ASN program and I'm very happy here. From everyone I've talked to, the new grads from my school have a much easier time getting hired than the BSN new grads from my alma mater. I personally have seen several of these BSN students and have heard about many more from the hospital staff (I work there too so I hear a lot) and I know that I'm better off where I am.

In the future I do plan to do my RN-BSN and probably an MSN as well.

Why would anyone perceive you as dumb? Perhaps you came across as a bit immature in your interviews?

Well it doesn't matter now. OK, its disappointing not getting into the program of your choice, but in the end you will be an RN and you can bridge to a BSN program. I doubt anyone will think that you are dumb for that, if they do, then they are the ones that are dumb.

I sense you have some growing to do, and that might be what the interviewers thought.

Yes, you certainly do. Take as a lesson learned for future interviews.

This is a prime example that having a 4.0 GPA doesn't automatically mean you'll get in. The common factor between the schools was your interview. For the future I would work on that when you start applying for nursing jobs.

I had to laugh at the community college comment because so many parents put negative things in their kids' head that community colleges aren't good enough. When you start your ASN program at your CC, trust me they'll be eating their words. RN programs are NO WALK IN THE PARK. You got in so count your blessings. Many people want your spot.

I am going to assume you were "venting" and that once you thought about it you do not really mean "dumb community college student". I also realize you are only 19 and from the sounds of it you were raised to believe that university students are smart and community college students are dumb. Well, you are now old enough to begin thinking on your own, and that you must do!! BE PROUD OF YOUR GPA, TEAS SCORE and please, please don't be so judgmental.. Pretty much the only difference between university and community college is the price tag. When you graduate and begin as a new grad nurse, ADN and BSN usually begin at about the same salary. I can also pretty much assume that perhaps your parents are going to make you feel bad because after all, they want to tell everyone that their child is going to the University of such and such, and not the inferior community college. Be your own person, stand proud and try to explain to your parents what everyone on here is telling you. I also am going to a community college, and I couldn't be more proud. I am saving a ton of money and in the end I will be a nurse. I can tell you have a heart because you mentioned wanting to help the less fortunate over seas. So- make the plans to get your BSN. There are many ways to get where you want to go in life. You are just taking a different route, but you will get there. Good luck and please have a heart to heart with your parents. They need to understand and they for sure need to get rid of the Ego.

Who is "they"...are you saying that you called the admissions of all 5 of the BSN programs that you applied to and they said you failed the interview?

I'll be honest...I do not think that a school is going to give you a reasons, especially 5 of them, of why you didn't get into the program.

I got an answer for you. You are an arrogant, spoiled, brat who is not suitable for working as a nurse. My advice to you, switch majors, or get an attitude adjustment.

Sincerely,

Wow and you're equally rude so maybe you should take your own advice.

Ummm I'd cut the attitude before you start your classes or the teachers and your *dumb* classmates will eat you for breakfast.

And just one *dumb* community college student to another it's "I speak very articulately" not "I speak very articulate".

Couldn't have said it better myself! :yeah:

I guess I don't have an answer for you. After all I'm just a dumb community college student. SHEESH!
