Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I have wanted to be a nurse since I was 6 years old. I have always had the passion to make people feel better, deal with blood and everything, for foreverrrr. But, school. I can't grasp it! I am getting my CNA right now, and I'm doing well with that. But, with my core classes for nursing (I want to/will be an RN), Anatomy is kicking my toooooshy. I took it in a five week span, and I did HORRIBLE. I am so scared this is going to ruin all of my chances to becoming a nurse. I am willing to travel to a different college, retake it, and get into a different RN program if at all possible. I don't know what to do though. :( What should I do?!?

Everything will be okay. First what grade did you get? If you got a C or lower and you feel that you do not comprehend the material take it over. Find out what your schools policy is for retaking courses. That course is a foundation for what you will learn later and build off of it. Just breathe maybe you took on to much this semester. Also look for a school with tutors for anatomy. My school didn't have it but some schools do have assistance. Next if you need help in class again get it right away. Good luck !!!!

I think your first step needs to be to talk to an advisor. Schools and nursing programs vary a lot in how they look at retakes, if they allow them at all. Some schools will replace the first grade with the second grade, for example, while others will average the two grades together. Some programs will only look at the first attempt, others limit the number of retakes possible. Make sure you understand that policy with the school/program you are looking at.

Also, try not to be too hard on yourself. A&P is tough. Summer sessions are tough. The quick pace isn't for everyone, especially when there is so much information presented. Try to look at the situation and figure out why it didn't work for you and what you can do in order to be successful - do you just need a slower pace, do you need to adjust your study habits, were there specific topics that were difficult to grasp that a tutor could help you with, etc.

Good luck!

I did get a C, but my school only looks at your first attempt. :( I don't know what to do. I'm going to go see an advisor this week. I just really hope I didn't screw this up :( It's the only thing I have ever wanted, in my life :( And I'm only 19, so I want it pretty bad :(

Anatomy in 5 weeks? Sheesh! I did it in an 11 week quarter and it was hard. But never fear! You are young, you have time to do this. Also, you're willing to travel if necessary, which is another boon. At my school you can retake a class and that replaces your grade ( and perks up your GPA), I know of many people who've done that. To be honest, a C in anatomy is not good when competition for nursing schools is so tight. If you do retake it, you need a game plan on how to approach it. I did get an A my first time, but I am a major nerd with no social life, and I lived and breathed A&P. Not that you need to do that, but you do need to find what works for you, because science grades are important. The same topics are going to come up in nursing school, and you'll want to be well prepared. Don't worry! It sounds like you have the ambition, and that carries a lot of weight in and of itself.

If nothing else you can take heart that math and science universally age off after 5 years. At 19 that sounds like an eternity. At 40, not so much.

Talk to your adviser, see what she has to say and what she can do to help you! If they let you retake this course, approach it with a set game plan of how to get the material down. I'm about to be taking A&P and am really stressed about it, but we have to get a B in order to be program ready at my college.

If there is nothing they can do, you can always look at what RN2BDFW said...it will become obsolete after 5 years, and you'll be able to retake it again.

Best of luck! :) Keep your head up, things always have a way of working themselves out. If this is truly your passion, never give up!

Well, I have decided I'm going to get my CNA now, apply for the LPN (since my grade is so low :( ) and then try to apply for the RN next year, that way, I'll have the experience, and they will realize how bad I want this :) haha. I really want it though, there isn't anything else I can do. And we can't take it twice. :/ They take the first grade no matter what. I am going to kick butt on the TEAS and NLN though.. :) Hopefully that will better my chances!! I am going to apply for both this upcoming year, LPN in February, and RN in March, hopefully I will get into one!!

BTW, thank you everyone for your encouragement. You guys are all amazing
