I dont want to do this anymore!!!

Updated:   Published

I dont know where to begin. I just do not want to be a nurse anymore. I really never did, since 2nd year of nsg school, but I didn't want to quit such a big commitment,I graduated. I have no desire to be a med surg nurse, in fact I would probably stink at it. I cant imagine being a med surge nurse. Thats why I went into ER right out of school, left that, did pedi home health for a while, now I am in the OR. I liked that for the first few weeks, now I hate that too. I dont know if its nursing, me, or I just cant hack it. The problem is I need this job I have for the benefits, and my salary. Plus my husband will *flip out* if I quit another job again. But I truely believe I shouldnt be in such a profession as nursing if my heart isn't in it..but.what else can I do? Is there anything you guys can suggest career/husband wise????? I have been telling him I love this new job, everythings going great, and actually it is, except that I am a nervous wreck inside, and I am counting the hours til lunch, break, and quitting time. I actually think he might divorce me if I quit!!! (or at the least be very very bitter towards me) I dont know whats bothering me more: the fact that I dont want to be a nurse, or the fact that I will dissapoint my family. Help......any advice will be appreciated.........:o

How long have you been practicing?

My suggestion is to find a non-clinical area. That's what I did. Send a private message if you like, or I will detail it here....however, I need to get back to work.;)

I miss clinical practice some, but, um yeah, not much.

I'm sorry you're going through this.

Hi Control,

I have only 3 months exp in med surg because I quit after being sick and stressed out. I do not want to go back to a hospital. What non clinical areas do you think I could go into? Thanks

The non-hospital jobs out there are really varied. They may or may not pay less than hospital work. They can also be competitive. For my community health nurse job, there were 50 applicants, many with far more degrees than I have. I was told I got the job because I had bothered to review the agency's mission statement and function. My point...sometimes you need to be aggressive in how you go after a non-clinical job because other people want them as well.

Community Health

Public Health

State Regulator/inspector

Case Management

Occupational Health

For examples. Many of these do involve patient contact but not as frenetic as the hospital setting.

. I have always been a strong patient advocate, but was incredibly disheartened by the fact that there is NO time to make the bond that a patient need in order to become a true patient advocate because your always running around feeling like a chicken with its head cut off.

I just know I am very disappointed with nursing as a whole these days. My mom always told me that I would've been better growing up in their generation because I truly CARE about other human beings - unlike most places who pay top dollar for someone to push pills and write notes and hurt others.

I agree with this, totally. Sometimes I wonder, atleast for me, if social work would have been a better choice?? How about you, did you ever consider that??

I am exactly like you. I will be a nurse 4 years this May and I've had four jobs. I could never find anything I liked and I was always anxious. You should not need meds just to function as a nurse. I finally got a 5th job working as a precert RN for a company that is hired by auto insurance companies. I have a desk and work on a computer all day but still get to see interesting medical cases. It's great and I will never go back to bedside nursing again. Look into insurance companies and even if you feel like you don't have the experience (which I didn't) it doesn't hurt to try!

Dear ChristiansMommy,

When you say insurance co., do you mean health ins. co, life insurance, auto insurance. And if so, what title will I be looking for. In other words, what would be the title of the RN postion that insurance co. are looking for? I do not want to go back to bedside nursing and is hoping to get into something different. Thanks.

I have considered social work. I wish I had did this instead of nursing. But the problem is that I think to get into this field, I would need a degree in social work. I just got my BSN. I do not have the money or time to to back for another degree. If I could use my BSN for social work, I would jump at the chance.

I'm glad to know that I am not alone. I hope someone can help me with my dilemma. I graduated from nursing school in May 06 and just recently received by RN license yesterday. As a new grad I was hired to work in the Emergency Room. I was thrilled with this job offer because I decided half way through nursing school that was what I wanted to do. Well after 1 month of working I absolutely hated everything about my job and decided one day I know longer wanted to work there and sent an e-mail to my boss and basically said I was not going back. The problem is I don't know if it was the job itself that I hated so much or if my co workers were the main contributing factor. I found the nurses to be back stabbing and hostile. I have never worked in a hospital before, so when I talked to the nurse manager about what I was feeling she basically said that nurses are like this everywhere so I better just get used to it. So, my question is this: Are nurses like this everywhere you go or is just the ER? I don't know what other department I would like to work in and I am terribly afraid of having the same experience all over again. Any advice?

ayonti,

I believe the poster is referring to "Utilization Review RN", which requires 1-3 yrs. of clinical experience to my knowledge.

and to comment on your other post about going into social work......have you thought about psych nursing???

Dear dijmart,

I also thought about psych nursing. I went to the forum by specialty for psych on this same site trying to get some info. I came to the conclusion that I do not want to deal with hospitals, assessments, doctors, medications and all the paper work that goes along with it. I had worked in an office setting for 11 years before going into nursing and I want to go back to that type of setting. I would really love working for social or humans services. Or nursing in an office setting.

Thanks everyone..... really... it helps to "type" about it here...

faeriwand.yes, I take an anti anxiety...I just think I really dont want to do this anymore.I just keep coming to that conclusion.....or I justt havent found the right job yet...... I am going to look into a non clinical position. that seems like a dream come true...being a RN, but in a non clinical setting. I could still work, using my degree I worked hard for, but not doing something I hate. I really, really, really want to just call in tomorrow and never go back.............

OK I admiit I only read as far as this post. There a lot to wade though to get to the end of this thread.

You stated you never wanted to go to nursing school in the first place. YOu are absolutely right that You should not stay in a job you hate so badly. You need to find some back bone as well. You are willing to sacrafice yourself and risk your own wellbeing for fear of your hubby. If he is abusive find a way out of the relationship. If not the be a big girl and take care of yourself like an adult and stop lying to him. Because if you do not this will surely backfire in your face and the very thing that you fear and possibly more will come to pass.

Gently tell him you have not been honest with him because you fear he would be upset with you. (or what ever it is you fear) then tell him the truth. Don't whinne tell him calmly and loveingly. You might be surprised at the response.

You sent your boss an E-MAIL that said you weren't returning?? No face-to-face to say you were ready to quit because of the situation (opportunity to fix), no notice given? Honestly, I don't know what you experienced in the ER but I can't imagine it's going to be easy for you to get another hospital job now, anyway.

Hello, this is my 1st time addressing this forum, and 1st day visiting this site. I find it very ironic that the very 1st posting I read is dealing with the issues I've struggling with now. I am a LPN and a junior in a BS Nursing program. I work full time in a Long-Term facility as a ventilation nurse and floor Charge Nurse. I recently quite the Nursing program after the 2nd week in class. I don't want to be a nurse anymore. After dealing with the patients,co-workers,and shortages in the real world, I think I would like to go into radiology or back into the OR as a scrub tech/cirulation nurse. This is my second career, I'm 48yrs old and I don't feel it's worth the price to not like your work. I like most of my residents and short term patients, I just don't like the day to day nurse eat nurse routine I've witness. For a profession that is suppose to be compasionate, there is a true lack of compassion for each other. Good luck in making a decision regarding staying or going, just do what makes you the happiest/healthiest.

There are a lot of non-clinical jobs out there. I have been doing Maternal/Child Case Management for almost 20 years now and love it. Look for job titles such as case management, utilization review, concurrent review. There are also clinic jobs available at some of the city/county hospitals that do not entail bedside nursing.

Best of luck in your search,
