Okay, guys I need some encouragement. Since I started nursing school I have been passing just to pass; looking for questions online and then memorizing them. This has made me pass. But I don't understand the material when someone asks me out of the blue. I would not know. Same goes with skills. I get nervous to do vital signs, and most times I do them wrong. I feel very discouraged. I haven't had anyone to help me in my school... And I feel like really bad. I don't want to go to work with no skills...But I want to pass!! I am in a private school (new school) not even accredited! I cannot even read/make proper nursing notes. My skills suck, and I especially suck at cardiac... Anything to do with it... I have hope that I when I get a job I will learn through orientation, but some of my classmates have told me that they do not teach you there... I am in my last semester. Should I just quit and start over? Help me out please?
I can answer certain things. But i am really not good in cardiac, respiratory and meds , although I passed pharm. I am borderline every time. When you say you've been memorizing questions you found online-- are you seeing these same questions on your exams?I do not see the same questions on tests but they have the same concepts. I read the rationale before moving on.
I feel a lot like you do, that I'm not ready to do this.. that I not where I need to be going into the last semester. Everyone I've talked to in my class have said they feel the same way. Perhaps you're just being anxious? When you say 'just pass'.. are you borderline every time?
I did. I put all of my books online and I do questions from their websites too. Also ATI. i do read chapters but not the entire chapter. I read stuff from med surg made easy. But i concentrate on answering questions.
Why are you not studying all of the content? I'm going to just say this flat out: You are dangerous, and your laissez-faire attitude is unprofessional. I wouldn't want to be your preceptor; I wouldn't want to have to be your co-worker. There are people out there who really want this. Go find something that is your passion and leave nursing to the people who are willing to put forth the effort to get that license and job.
i dont know why you all think i shouldn't do nursing. I do read. I am reading now. I have been very discouraged in the way i have been doing in school because i was barely passing & i did not know what to do, so i changed the way i study by doing questions. that doesn't mean i am not going to re read things and learn my material well. the reason i am asking this question is to get help, to see what i should do, any ideas.I will read the material, and i do not do anything in clinical that i do not know and i make sure i let my instructors know. it haunts me everyday that i dont know certain things, and its because i need help that i am asking. I am not careless and would never do something to anyone if i do not know the skill/material. I always look up meds before administering them, and always make sure another person is with me, even to do vitals. I DO care.
I am also graduating from an unaccredited ADN program and the RN- BSN program at the school i'm going into does not care so don't even worry about that.
All of the masters and doctorate programs that I looked at require that you graduate from an RN school that is CCNE or ACEN (formerly NLNAC) accredited, so I would care.

You DO sound pretty cavalier in your handling of your studies in your first post...you are skipping over the foundation of your education-critical thinking...critical thinking helps you answer those questions when someone asks you a question out of the blue...you may not know it, but be able to "talk it through" on "what I DO know." You also did not address your Fundamental nursing skills...measuring vital signs is a important part of your assessment practice.
I am surprised (maybe I shouldn't be *shrugs*) on that your theory, or at least your clinical instructors would've intervened with you sooner, and developed an action plan.
I'm with posters who say it might be too late to make up for "lost time", however, I do have suggestions in understanding the material:
For pharmacology: if you can, get PharmPhlash Success cards. They are a great way to fully understand the concepts of pharmacology, WHY certain meds are chosen, etc.
For skills: you can utilize You Tube to look at nursing procedures...there are also a to. Of resources here in AN that seasoned nurses have suggested for learning systems, as well as understanding the concept and how it links to the nursing process, A & P, chemistry, etc. if possible, spend and intense amount of time honing those skills, even if you volunteer doing BPs. CNA/ tech work can help with VS and ADLs and other data collecting techniques, depending in where you work; unfortunately, you way be I a position where you may not have the opportunity to get "comfortable" with those skills prior to graduation, or risk your need to study.
I will suggest a book: Critical Thinking and Clinical Judgment. It will give you a sense of how to "put it all together." However, these skills will be honed over time,
