I have 8 credits left and I quit!

I can't believe it! I'm changing my major w/ only 8 credits left of nursing school :bluecry1: it's not really by choice though...

last spring i had to withdraw due to illness, this spring i re-applied to complete my degree and the "admission, progression, and graduation committee" decided "I'm not ready for the pressure of nursing school". I have 90 hours of community clinicals, Role Transition (how to write a resume), and "community care" left. Not a lot of pressure there!!!

It's not like I'm a slacker either - I'm an A-B student, got into Sigma Theta Tau, and Golden Key...

I've just wasted 2 years of my life and i'm so depressed....

I'm changing my major to "liberal studies" not quite as impressive

:angryfire

If nursing is what you really want to do...don't let one school's committee close the door on you. First of all I would appeal their decision and state what you included in your post here..."A-B student, invested 2 years, 8 credits to go".

At any rate, you can always apply to another school...perhaps allowing you to transfer some or all of your nursing credits.

Wishing you the best of Luck in your decision!

Definitely appeal it. But first, if possible, get a few evaluations from psychiatrists and/or psychlogists.

I would really hesitate to call the two years you spent in school as a waste. But on the other hand I see your point. Who are they to say you aren't ready? You withdrew because you were aware of your limitations and couldn't apply yourself due to illness. Now you come back prepared with your health up to par and you get rejected. Don't quit. Fight back and go to the scholastic review board. There you will be able to voice your reasons and support your actions. Stay strong. :kiss

See if you can transfer most or all of your credits to a nearby college.

Maybe you could graduate from there?

Anyhow, DEFINITELY appeal. This sounds really wrong.

There's no way you should give up 8 credits short to go for a Liberal Arts degree unless you have an elaborate plan or a job already lined up or something. When I worked at Target I worked with so many people with Liberal Art degrees and Psychology degrees and they were making $6/hr. That blew my mind!

So youre saying youre short of 1 semester? Can you take the LPN boards if thats the case? Assuming that you are completely well of that illness and physically capable of taking care of pts. At least its something rather than completely wasting your nursing education. And then maybe continue on becoming an RN eventually when they see you "fit" to take the pressures of nursing school.

I agree with the above posters...do something about it!

Don't settle for something "less than impressive." Don't settle for anything but what you want! And even if you have to work hard at getting there at least it will be worth it.

Hey - don't feel bad! I found myself doing the very same thing a few years back when I did it with only 10 weeks of student teaching left :scrying:

...BUT I found when I gave myself time and really thought things through I found myself going back and completing my Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education WHEN I WAS READY FOR IT -

Give yourself time to heal physically and mentally. If you are truly to be a nurse the choice will come to you and everything will work in your favor.

I wish you the best of luck and may your true wishes come true

Sorry this happened to you. Perhaps a nursing program that doesn't give a two cents about your personal health and well being just isn't worth it? Most likely this is a preview of how the profession will treat you later if something else should happen. (Gee, ya think?) Well, continue to take care of yourself. You can always get another degree, but you can't get another body. Just don't become a liberal arts major. That's another joke. Get some sort of real skill so you can support yourself in the future.

Oh, here's another thought. A smart, hard-working student who actually wants to continue on (given all the negatives that come with nursing) is not worth giving another chance? Typical nursing school rationale. Perhaps a C plus lottery selection student can step up to the bat and take your place? Yeah, there's an idea! :uhoh3: . In any event, the nursing "shortage" will continue, with or with out you. In my opinion, the nursing profession creates most of the problems and conditions that its own nurses complain about. Don't be depressed. Maybe you dodged a bullet and you just don't know it yet. Time to get on with other things.

Gosh...you guys are great! I get away from posting on the boards and i forget how supportive and caring y'all are. I appreciate all of the opinions shared. I honestly don't know what i'll do....

Sarah

I would apply to another nursing school. My best friend started to do the same thing bcse she got pregnant again. The diploma program that we were going to apply to changed to a BSN program. She had enough credits to get a liberal arts degree. She couldn't find a job.She is now on a waiting list to go to a BSN program and is taking the extra classes she needs.

Don't give up.I have been in school on and off for 7 yrs.I was told by a counselor that I would never pass algebra. Then he mentioned the LPN program and how they have great jobs, etc.Well,I talked to someone over him. After 3 attempts, and this time lots of tutoring,I got thru algebra with a B.

I wish you the best of luck.

I agree with some of the ideas posted here. I most definately would appeal. If you can get some proof you were only off due to illness that would be good. A health check from a current doc would be good to say your able to satisfy the requirements of the educational classes and such.

I was told it was a two year wait for the clinical in nursing school. Come time I applied and was told sorry another year... WHAT? They told me the seats left were for younger students/out of high school/saving seats?? WHAT? I saw a lawyer for age discrimination/mind you I was only 22 and low and behold after the lawyer phone call/letter I suddenly had a seat/surprise. Don't let the schools committee bully you. FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT..

Big smile,
