I was a cam model. Can I still be a nurse?

Updated:   Published

Hi there. I'm really nervous to post this...so please be nice.

From ages 18-22 I was a cam model (that's internet Media done from home, if you didn't know. Don't Google it! :p) I never got very popular but it was a good way to pay for school and feed my family without having to pay for a babysitter. (I worked nights)

I'm not sure if this shows up on a background check. It didn't when I was in CNA classes, and I was easily hired after that as a CNA/HCA. I'm worried about being hired as an RN though. I did not use my real name as a performer, but for taxes and age verification I did have to use my real name.

I'm currently doing prereqs for nursing, and I was wondering if anyone had any idea:

1. if this will come up in a background check? I messaged the person in control of background checks for my school and she said she wasn't sure, but it "should be fine as long as it doesn't show up"

2. if it DOES show up, is this going to be a huge issue? I heard that there was a nurse who lost her license for investing in/owning an adult site. But I think she continued that AFTER she got her license.

Nursing is really really what I want to do, but I'm worried about going through school and not being able to get a job after.

Please save me your judgment ? what's done is done and I don't want to get into a whole big 'is Media evil' discussion. I know some nurses who danced/stripped to pay for nursing school, but cam work leaves a bigger footprint considering it's literally all pictures and videos.

I live in Washington State and plan to stay here. We're in a pretty liberal area so I dunno if that changes anything.

I've accepted that I'll probably never be able to work with kids, but I really hope I don't have to give up nursing all together.

I filed taxes obviously during the years I worked, so I'm not sure if background checks include that.

Thanks for reading!

Honestly I feel that it shouldn't matter. Who cares if you did Media in the past. It is a legitimate legal business and I feel that people shouldn't judge you for that. Whoever said nurses have to be pristine and full of purity is full of crap and obviously think nurses are virgins dressed in starched white dresses all the time. We're not nuns or anything.

I for one am sick of the perception that as nurses we have to be pure, perfect, compassionate beings who live in martyrdom. We are human, and we want to be treated like one, not placed on a pedestal of unrealistic expectations. So honey, I may not be helpful but I wish you good luck and screw all who give you flack or judge you.

I would "like" this 10,000 times if I could. Thank you ! wave.gif.f76ccbc7287c56e63c3d7e6d800ab6c

I checked my credit report and didn't see anything.

I was 18, I actually think I might have been 19 now that I think about it, but anyway..thank you for the reply!

I can't find any sites that tell me what the exact clause says. I also don't really know if I'm searching right. I've been googling "Washington state BON moral turpitude clause" and I'm getting a lot of unrelated stuff. Or I'm going crazy. Or it's the migraine I'm developing.

Do you know what kind of background check I should get for myself?

Pardon my ignorance but is being cam model legal in the state of Washington? If not illegal it may bypass the moral turpitude clause. You could ways call the BON anonymously and ask. This would most likely not appear on a background check if you committed no crime or were never arrested . Still how would you handle it if a former patron turned patient recognized you? OR perhaps a co-worker? These are things you need to consider.

Good luck

If someone recognized you from your work--then they were a customer and may want to be quiet about it. Good luck to you, Raggedy.

You should survive a background check. My only advice to you is to refrain from having any cam sessions at your place of work. If you work nights and it is really quiet, the temptation might be there. I urge you to resist those temptations.

... No matter what.

I don't see why not. Look for jobs when you graduate and go from there. I'm a stand up comedian, music artist and youtube partner and I don't censor myself. Youtube pays me and it's been on my taxes for years. None of my employers have ever brought it up.. And I make some really crude (comical) videos lol.

Thanks for all the responses.

I could answer that "was it worth it" question but I don't necessarily feel starting that whole conversation :)

Being a cam model is very legal! The post by RiskManager was super helpful and answered my question. So...thank you RiskManager!

I quit camming the moment I started CNA school, I doubt I'll be tempted (or have the time) to cam from work. :p I'm pretty sure that was a joke but I know some people are going to read that and think that a cam model might do that.

It's so silly when people assume people in the adult industry have no regard for laws/other people. I would never do a public cam show. I would never involve parties that could not conset in a sexual act. I would never cam near or with people who did not fill out proper age verification through a reputable website. (ANd yes, there are reputable Media sites because believe it or not, sexuality doesn't mean stupid or messy!)

If someone recognizes me, I don't think I owe it to them to answer. (Depending on the person) I've also been asked if I'm some girl name Kris who lives in my town. Even if I WAS Kris I could still say "No, I think you're thinking of someone else!" it helps that I didn't use my real name.

ALSO worth mentioning if someone recognized me, it means they are searching for a very specific fetish/niche Media. I'm not entirely sure they would want to out themselves as having that fetish.

I also look quite different. I've lost 100 pounds and changed my hair color.

My wife is an elementary school teacher, and in her professional journals, I have read stories of teachers who did sex work prior to their educational career and who have been fired and had their licenses removed after their past employment came to light. The parents apparently freak out when they discover that the teacher used to be an escort or acted in adult films.

I've seen a lot of that too. That's why I said I've come to terms with the fact that I can't work with kiddos. That's also why I posted. Your comment really helped by the way! Thanks for the clear answer and not being judgmental ?
