Question:

If your hubby is working in Santa Clara, why do you want to work in SF? Stanford is way closer to Santa Clara than SF.

Tazzi,

Traffic here is bad too but not that bad. If I work an 8 hr shift and leave at 4pm, It usually takes me an hour to get home. On the weekends I can get to work in 30mins. Around here it depends on where you live. Some areas traffic is horrific even during non rush hour.

So are you saying if I live in Pleasanton I should work in SF? Also, I can't find the website for San Francisco General. Hubby doesn't mind commuting.

If you live in Pleasanton (the East Bay), your hubby will have a 1 hr to 1 hr 20 min hour commute one way to Santa Clara. And if you worked in SF, you would have over 1.5 hour commute one way! So it doesn't make any sense to live there for either one of you. Pleasanton is in the East Bay, which includes Oakland, Berkeley, San Ramon, Richmond etc. However, Oakland and Berkeley are just a BART ride way to SF. I would make more sense to live on the Peninsula (Mtn View, Santa Clara, San Jose, Palo Alto, Redwood City, etc) and both of you could be close to work. Stanford is in Palo Alto, which a lot closer to Santa Clara than San Francisco!

Here's info about the San Francisco Bay Area:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Francisco_Bay_Area

Here's a map that shows what I'm talking about. http://sfgate.com/traveler/acrobat/maps/1998/sfbay01.pdf

On this main map, if you look on the right side you'll see Fremont. Pleasanton is just north of it up highway 580. Then look at the bottom right. You'll see San Jose. Right next to the San Jose airport, you'll see Santa Clara where your hubby will be working. Now go up highway 101 from San Jose and you'll see Mtn View, Palo Alto and Stanford University (where Stanford Hospital is). If you continue up 101 or highway 280, you'll run into San Francisco. See how close Palo Alto is to Santa Clara compared to if you went to SF? You can click on the maps on the left side if you want to zoom in further.

The thing about the East Bay is that it gets really hot in the summer. It's much cooler and more pleasant in the South Bay/Peninsula area. San Francisco is generally cooler than either one.

That is a great map. I printed it out. That really helps. We will have to look into the area's close to Santa Clara. Hubby doesn't mind commuting. I'm the one that hates commuting.

Thanks again.

you might want to look at a map. santa clara is south east of san francisco. it's about 1 hour to commute one way.

a map will tell you distance but won't tell you a thing about actual commute times.

if you are working 12 hour shifts you might get lucky and miss the horrendous traffic problems on one side of your shift but not on both sides. a commute from sf to santa clara can easily be a 1½ hour drive one way (or longer in bad weather or an accident) leaving one quite frazzled just from the drive alone. it's not pretty on bay area highways almost anytime (day or night or weekends).

if your husband is working in santa clara my suggestion is you strongly consider living and working in the south bay area to start unless you enjoy "combat" commuting for a couple hours (round trip) each work day.

good luck to you and welcome to the land of nurse to patient ratios!

If you don't have kids yet you might consider actually living in San Francisco. Best way to experience it. Hubby could take train to work. SF General is trauma center, great for experience. I live in Marin and work at CPMC in San Francisco. Marin is nice but TOOOOOOOO far to commute to Santa Clara.

As Ken said, welcome to the land of nurse/patient ratios!

I agreee with others, why commute when you don't have to? Try to get a job near hubby and try to find a place to live near both.

hello,

kaiser SF has new positions in the ER. you can appy in the kaiser's website. also try the aftercollege.com website, upload your resume and submit to all the facilities you want. there, you can also get the nursing recruiter's contact info and more.

good luck and welcome to SFO

My husband is currently looking to relocate to Seton hospital in Daly city. I have been looking at the maps provided earlier on this post but I am still concerned about the commute. I am wondering if anyone would be willing to give me some suggestions on cities to live in near Daly, also a place to raise children, ages 16, 13, 11 and 9...and be close to the beach...

We had planned on living in San Luis Obispo, but just cant pass up the wages in SF. I hope we will enjoy the community. We live in Utah...so it will be a huge change for me. Hubby is from LA.

How difficult is it to get housing?

Thanks for any help

ken's absolutely correct, tiff. you might be used to commuting times, but sf traffic is a whole different animal.

Well I guess I won't be working in SF if we live in the San Ramon, Pleasanton area. People in my husbands new office live in Pleasanton and say the commute is about 45 mins. They also suggested he take the BART to work. I really appreciate everyone's input.

I did look at Kaiser's website. Whoah! Tons of ER jobs. Wow!!! What is up with all the part-time jobs? 64 hrs/pp Is that normal in CA? Here mostly everyone works 72hrs/pp. I noticed they had tons of part time jobs but no many FT jobs. OR does Cali consider anything less than 40hrs part time? Here in MD we consider 72 hrs/pp full time.

Also what is the nurse patient ratio? I see all these posts about nurse patient ratio. Is there a mandate on max ratios?

TIA

We're just lazier than other states. I think it's a state law now....
