As an RN for the California Dept. of Mental Health, if a patient decides to refuse treatment (i.e. refused lab draws, Hep C treatment, dental work, ECG, EEG, ect...), we are being required by the Dept. of Mental Health to attempt to change the patients mind via education on at least a monthly basis. Is this ethical and if not, where can I find the info to substantiate this.

As a Ψ RN for the Sate of Californai in one of their State Hospital (ASH), I have no down time whatsoever. If I do my job as required, there is not enough time in the day, even in a 12 hour shift, to complete everything. I spend that vast majority of my time in a 12 hrs shift (0630 - 1900) on the computer "treating the charts" so the heads hochos of the California DMH will be happy and the U.S. Dept. of Justice will tell us "Good Job" . As a psyc RN in a CA state hospital I deal with individuals who are afflicted with mental illness on a daily basis. There is a negative stigma to M.I in much of Western society. These stigmas are missing in a good number of societies throughout third world countries. In those third world societies, M.I. is seen as a illness or injury no differently than any other illness or injury and are treated as such. Those afflicted with M.I in said societies have a much higher recovery rate than those who are "treated" in Western societies, especially in the US. (This information gathered from the WHO and the President's Council on M.I.). It seems that our society, not the afflicted, need to make the change.

Is it true that any shift over eight hours is paid at time and one half? So if you worked 12 hours a day...3 twelves, 16 of those hours would be paid as overtime? I noticed CA law states that anything over eight hours is considered as such.

My husband is currently looking to relocate to Seton hospital in Daly city. I have been looking at the maps provided earlier on this post but I am still concerned about the commute. I am wondering if anyone would be willing to give me some suggestions on cities to live in near Daly, also a place to raise children,ages 16, 13, 11 and 9...and be close to the beach... We had planned on living in San Luis Obispo, but just cant pass up the wages in SF. I hope we will enjoy the community. We live in Utah...so it will be a huge change for me. Hubby is from LA. How difficult is it to get housing? Thanks for any help

I also believe circumcision is quite brutal -forced male genital mutilation. It's barbaric to me. If the question is of HIV prevention, than wait until the infant becomes of age (an adult) to make the decision if he wants his member partially removed. I haven't heard yet of any report of infants catching HIV through sexual intercourse. It's their body, let them make their own choice!

Did clinicals there last semester and loved it. Everyone there was prof. and helpful and went out of their why to make you feel at home. In talking to the nurses there, they all had only great things to say about the hospital, management and each other. It is a smaller hospital in comparison to DRMS in St. George or the ones in Vegas however this allows the nurses in different units to help each other out if one units get overwhelmed (which is not very often). The RN to pt. ratio at that time was about 1:4 on med/sur floor and less than that on L&D. I've heard they will be expanding the L&D unit soon. I live about 45 min. from Mesquite and go there often to play. Love it there.

I'll be graduating next year as an RN and have been doing a lot of "soul searching" to what type of nursing I want to do and have come to the decision of becoming an OR nurse. Now that that decision has been made, I have a lot of questions that remain unanswered such as the requirements to become an OR nurse. Is it something a new grad can go straight into or does one need to have experience in overall nursing to be considered for the job. Also, what are the main differences between working in the OR of a major hospital and working in same day surgery. Also, are OR nurses in as short of supply as other type of nurses? go for it!! i'm a 44 yr old male with 7 kids (five still at home) and am in 1st year of rn school, it's my 3rd career change. in high school i was a c average student and did horribly in math and science. i now have a 3.8 gpa, go to school and work full time and still have time for the family. school has never been so fun (nor challenging). i say "go for it" chris
