HURST REVIEW--Is it worth it?

Nursing Students NCLEX

Hi Graduate Nurses,

I graduated in December and am preparing for the boards. I read a few pots in the NCLEX area on here and learned about Hurst Review. I have never heard of this. Can some one fill me in. My school uses ATI as part of on core program. Kaplan and ATI came to our school to talk about their NCLEX programs. But again I have never heard of Hurst Review. My teachers never metioned. Fellow graduates, fill me in.

Thank you so much!!! I am getting nervous!!!

TILDOR,

The review was 99% content review then you have the option to take their mock nclex exam (called the Q-review) up to six times before your exam. I only took it 3 times (in case i failed), because you only have the option to take it 6 times over the course of two years. The questions were hard i thought (i scored in the 60's and 70's), but they definitely prepared me for the nclex. I really liked her rationales.

Did you use Saunders or any other nclex material?

Melissa is so right about the content in Hurst. Like I said I need a content review, and I really tink that Hurst can be used who may have been out of school for quite sometime, not only to pass NCLEX, but also for getting ready to go on the floor and work. I think someone else referred to it as "Nursing school in 4 days." , and I totally agree. Marlene teached in a way that is very easy to retain. Saunders has a lot of content, but I think using it I went into overload because it wants to tell you about every single thing you may or may not see in the real world or on NCLEX. What I am doing is after I watch Hurst, and study my packet a little I take the corresponding Saunder's end of chapter test. If I get 70% or better I move on if not, I read that chapter in Saunders.

Thank you so much!!! I need all the help I can get.

Thank you for your study tip. I believe I needed to read what you stated regarding Saunders and Hurst. I'm studying with Saunders since I've been out of school for awhile and need lots of content. While studying Saunders I feel my review on the content is not penetrating as much as I would like. I'm getting a little discouraged and not as motivated. I need to change things up so just this morning I was thinking of using the Hurst Review and Saunders the way your explaining it. Then I see your post and WOW....it just re-enforces my thoughts. Much appreciated. ;)

I used hurst for one and a half weeks..passed the nclex. Just make that time count!!

Hi guys,

Thanks for you your responses. I was at a book store and found a Hurst Prep book. I read 60 pages while there and realized I should just buy the darn thing. I loved all the info on how the NCLEX works. How to answer questions etc. The actually questions in the book were weak AND the answers are right after the questions AND there are two rows of questions on each page. This makes it impossible to read a question without seeing the answer for another one. In the end I passed the NCLEX in 91 questions!!! I am so relieved!!! :D

Our school required a review course. It was worth it to me. Everyone in our class that took the Hurst review course passed the NCLEX on their first try.

I took the HURST REVIEW online and I did not pass the test the first time. I have contacted Hurst Review and sent my result but no one ever tried to contact me. I wouold NOT do it again.

Hey Guys!! I have recently started studying for my NCLEX using the Hurst review. This is a core content review rather than strategy questions, unlike Kaplan. Has anyone used this program and been successful? Also, should I supplement anything else into my studying for question practice?

Every review program has had people using them and passing....as well as failing. There is not one program that is 'guaranteed' to get anyone to pass; they are, after all, PREP courses only. It is expected that by completing nursing school you are already nearly (if not all the way) ready to pass the NCLEX.

Some people are lacking when it comes to content, and for them, a program like HURST is crucial because if you don't grasp the content, well....you are going to fail the exam.

Once you have a good grip on the content, you also have to be able to APPLY the knowledge: if you cannot critically think your way through the scenarios to determine the best course of action (aka: choosing the correct answer), it doesn't matter how much content you can regurgitate. You must be able to strategize, prioritize, etc.

Where do you stand on all that? If you feel you have content well in hand, I"d suggest you take a look a some of the Kaplan quizzes/tests. They are available free in libraries, and there is much also available free online (although if you want the whole program in your house, you'll have to purchase a plan).

Good luck!

I utilized Hurst which I found to be very beneficial to me. It helped to reinforce content I already knew and to expand my knowledge on content areas in which I felt weak. I found that the Q reviews were directed towards their content and their content only which I felt needed to be supplemented in order to get more practice with questions. For this I utilized Lippincott's Q and A review.

As the PP stated, you can know all of the content in the world but if you cannot apply that knowledge, prioritize, and critically think through situations then you might as well not know it at all. For this, I recommend LaCharity's Prioritization, Delegation, and Assignments book. I felt that this book alone helped me significantly on NCLEX as with many others.

Many great threads on NCLEX reviews and materials that I hope you will find helpful. Good Luck!
