09-10 hrsa nursing scholarship

Nurses General Nursing

Hello all,

I'm starting this thread for the new applicants for the hrsa nursing scholarship 09-10. Tor prettylady, I think its a random selection. Its the luck of the draw.

I am wondering if anyone who received the scholarship in 2008 knows how much taxes they take out of the stipend payments? Or anyone who is knowledgeable. I am not sure if we have to pay federal taxes separately.

I received the stipend last year. They do not take any taxes out of the stipend, you claim them yourself. You also have to claim your tuition. That wasn't so bad last year but this year I will end up owing money! You will get the entire 1269.00 plus any back months and your ORC costs for the first month. There after you will receive the 1269.

Ok thanx Simplelife4me. I have one more question for you. I am in a situation in which my tuition will not be paid by the scholarship. That is because I receive grants such as Pale which is federal & deduct that from the cost of my tuition. I am wondering is that a norm for this scholarship?? I was under the assumption that no matter what my tuition would be paid for & that the grants I receive aside from the scholarship could be applied else where in my financial budgeting package at my school. HRSA is basically saying they are not going to pay for tuition which is already paid for by other funding like grants, and scholarships (I dont receive any other scholarship besides this one).

I attend a state school so my tuition is very low and PALE alone covers my tuition technically. So all I will be receiving is the stipend. Did you or anyone else have this same problem? I figured that other grants I receive could be applied somewhere else in my school budget towards my school expenses & Hrsa would pay for my tuition regardless. I dont see any sense in me getting rid of my grants to have them pay for it, that does not make any sense to me. So technically I will end up with my loans still this semester, since I was under the assumption that my aid would be configured in which my grants would pay for other expenses (and be cut a little to fit the budget), and that HRSA would pay my tuition regardless of my receiveing grants. I am a little skeptical of the scholarship now even though I am VERY thankful for it = )

-Thanks

can anyone answer this...

so do they consider the stipend income and it goes against us or do we just have to claim it?

21amarice, here is what it says on the bulletin:

Payment of Tuition & Required Fees Tuition and fees will be paid directly to the nursing school that the awardee is attending.

If tuition and fees for the initial Fall term of the 2009-2010 school year have been paid from another source of financial aid (e.g. Pell Grant, state grants or other scholarships), pending notice of an NSP award, the school may return payments to the source of funding and then submit an invoice to the NSP for payment. After the initial fall term, if sources of financial aid, other than NSP, have been used to pay for tuition and fees, the school will be instructed not to submit an invoice to the NSP for these costs, but to submit documentation stating that it will not be seeking payment for the term. However, if a balance remains, then the school may submit an invoice for the balance remaining. Although payments of tuition and fees are made directly to the nursing school, the student is liable for paying taxes on these amounts. See the “Taxation of the Nursing Scholarship.”

Since the Pell Grant is basically free money, they subtract that. The scholarship is only for tuition and fees and the stipend is for the cost of living. Hope this helps.

21amarice,

I do not know anyone in your situation but I am also not sure why you need to take out student loans still. Is it for books? Have you spoken with your financial aid department? Even if your tuition is still paid through pell grants and other grants the stipend is still a blessing that will help you each month. Your school should not include any loans in payment received. Those are private and your choice to keep or reject

21amarice,

but I am also not sure why you need to take out student loans still. Is it for books?

I don't know bout you, but $1300 a month doesn't even come CLOSE to covering my monthly living expenses. Things add up when you have a home mortgage, kids in daycare, car payment, car insurance, health insurance, food, utilities, etc.

Yeah, the living stipend is a huge blessing, but it is also only a yearly salary of around $15,000. That's well below poverty level. Soooo, for some of us, loans and other scholarships are still a nescessity.

Living costs do add up and ~1300 is definitely not enough.. but let's be very grateful for being able to go to school for free and having some money to help us while we are in school. No other scholarship is this generous.. we are very lucky! And hopefully.. our loans will be paid off shortly after we start working as a RN! :)

In no way, shape, or form am I being ungreatful! If you read my post I mention that it is a huge blessing, but was also addressing simplelife4me's question to 21amarice about why she would need to take out more loans.

sorry, i was not trying to imply that you or anyone else was being ungrateful... i know it's a huge blessing for all of us. i was hoping to clear things up for 21amarice that my understanding of the scholarship is for tuition and fees, other reasonable costs, and a stipend for living expenses. Grants have to be deducted or else it's like having free money to pay for additional living costs. I hope I'm making sense..

I think you have misundersood what I was saying. To survive I have taken out loans every single term I have been in school> The question which I was responding to was why HRSA was not paying for her tuition. I did not know what other costs she was speaking of, if they were school costs such as books or personal costs. I was recommending that she speaks with her financial aid if she hasn't already. There are other people out there who have never needed to take out a student loan and some who are working on top of the stipend and still take out student loans. That is all a personal preference but to me this stipend is a blessing and has eased a lot of the stress I would have had without it!!

did anyone get their first payment? i thought it would be by the 7th... but nothing.

No payment as of yet, but an email was sent out saying we "the new NSP awardees" would receive the stipend payment on or around the 10th. I will keep you posted if I receive something else before then
