I know it is entirely too early but I wanted to get a thread going for all of you who are planning to apply for the NSP this upcoming year. I know it is becoming more and more popular and there are always questions and people wanting to share experiences and such so I hope this thread will become helpful! I have signed up to get the alert for when the application is available for the 2013-2014 FY and hope to meet others who will be applying as well.

I work in Northwest Indiana just outside of Chicago. I was hired on at 25.50 per hour with 3.00 differential for nights, and 2.50 for weekends. Thats with no experience. I worked as an aide on the floor I was hired on for 6 months before I became an RN. They hired too aggressively and now the unit is very overstaffed. Have to float to other units a few times a week, and get mandatory low census a lot which uses up your PTO until its gone, then you just dont get paid. Had a job opportunity at a great hospital where you could pick up all the OT you want and prob make 100 grand a year if you went after it and cant go there because of HRSA. Its not as bad as I first though, but its bad. Only hospital in my area you can work at is the sister campus of the hospital I work at. Now, HRSA is talking about forcing me to quit my job to complete my service commitment because my facility is no longer eligible. Crazy!!! How can they approve you and then make you leave? Insanity. Found out how you can see where you can work as an RN. Go to HRSA - Find Shortage Areas: HPSA & MUA/P by Address - Version 2.0 and type in the exact address of the hospital you plan to work at. If either of the first two questions answer Yes, then its approved. HRSA was amazing while in school, but in the end its prob going to be a loss for me when you consider the lost income over 2 years. I was an accellerated 2nd degree student, good grades, good essays, 0 ECF because I worked as a 1099 in my previous job and had a bad previous year with a lot of business losses.

I completely agree. I am so nervous. My academic recommender turned my letter around in a matter of 2hrs! Makes me very wary about what the heck he wrote. He's the department chair and not one of my teachers. I feel like my teacher may have been better but I chose the department chairman because well, he's the chairman! (trumps the profs).

My next one is from a doctor (former boss) but my other colleague (also a doctor) wants to write one too....and she's a better writer. I hate to rescind the initial invite to the 1st doctor but between him and the chairman, I might have to.

Is there any way to see what your recommender wrote?

Well folks, now we play the waiting game. :)

I got my application in finally, what a pitb! I did look up all the hospitals in my area and they qualify. So, now to wait! Did anyone else have someone call them? My ap was waiting on a few more things so I hadn't submitted yet when a lady from HRSA called me to tell me my school qualified so I could submit my application...um yeah they told me that in an email a long time ago! Weird.

Mine were roughly 2 pages each, 12 point font double spaced.
