2013-2014 HRSA Nursing Scholarship Program

Published

I know it is entirely too early but I wanted to get a thread going for all of you who are planning to apply for the NSP this upcoming year. I know it is becoming more and more popular and there are always questions and people wanting to share experiences and such so I hope this thread will become helpful! I have signed up to get the alert for when the application is available for the 2013-2014 FY and hope to meet others who will be applying as well.

The email says by 07/28/13

It's strange---I've been checking creditkarma.com like a mad-woman, and haven't seen any credit inquiries...but when I just got an account with another free credit report site (quizzle.com) they reported that I had my credit pulled on July 15th by CBC something something....Whatever it was was listed as "federal government", so I imagine it's the HRSA folks.

For those of you going crazy about this (like me) I'd suggest trying a couple of different credit check sites, just make sure they're not the ones that lower your credit score by checking.

I also checked my credit report on quizzle after checking credit karma and not seeing anything. I had a credit inquire from CBC/DHHS/BPHC on the 16th. I hope this is a good sign. Fingers crossed.

For those of you that got your credit checked is your status still "under review" or does it say "finalist"?[/quote']

My status still says under review and my credit was checked on the 16th.

Have any NP students heard? Or is it all RN students who have heard so far?

I think it's all RN students who have heard so far on here...

Just checked all three credit agencies and no one has checked it yet. Not sure how long it takes to show up though.

I think maybe they offered it first to people with EFC's below 1,000. After the 28th (their deadline to submit things) maybe the rest of us will hear?

To all that received the scholarship and those that have not PLEASE do your research to see if there is a qualified facility near you. I have been researching for the past three days and I can not find a qualified facility with in 3 hours of where I currently live. There are HPSA's in my area, but not at the level 14 and above they are looking for. I can not relocate as I have kids in school and own a house. I called HRSA and they told me that if I do not find a job within 6 months than I would default and owe the government the money, which would be over $50,000.

Even though receiving this scholarship would help me while I am in school, I think that in the long run it's not the best choice for me. I will be in more debt when I leave school but will have the freedom to work where I want and not have the stress of finding a job in a qualified facility. Best of luck to everyone!

@jennanwarren, can you provide a link to the facilities we can look for? Thanks!

Find Shortage Areas: HPSA by State & County

You can look by state and county or put in an address. The score has to be above 14 in order to qualify. I have a very large facility that is close to me that have a score of 12 but does not qualify. Also, the scores change yearly. So a site that qualifies now may not qualify when you graduate.

Yes I remember someone saying in last year's thread that she found a place that qualified but then by the time she was goin to work their score changed so they made her work elsewhere. You do have to be super flexible

I can't be that flexible as I have kids in school and I don't want to move them. I have been stressing over this for a week and am happy with my decision to decline the award. It is a lot of pressure to graduate, pass NCLEX and find a job in 6 months, let alone a job in a qualified facility.
