I know it is entirely too early but I wanted to get a thread going for all of you who are planning to apply for the NSP this upcoming year. I know it is becoming more and more popular and there are always questions and people wanting to share experiences and such so I hope this thread will become helpful! I have signed up to get the alert for when the application is available for the 2013-2014 FY and hope to meet others who will be applying as well.
It's strange---I've been checking creditkarma.com like a mad-woman, and haven't seen any credit inquiries...but when I just got an account with another free credit report site (quizzle.com) they reported that I had my credit pulled on July 15th by CBC something something....Whatever it was was listed as "federal government", so I imagine it's the HRSA folks. For those of you going crazy about this (like me) I'd suggest trying a couple of different credit check sites, just make sure they're not the ones that lower your credit score by checking.
I also checked my credit report on quizzle after checking credit karma and not seeing anything. I had a credit inquire from CBC/DHHS/BPHC on the 16th. I hope this is a good sign. Fingers crossed.
To all that received the scholarship and those that have not PLEASE do your research to see if there is a qualified facility near you. I have been researching for the past three days and I can not find a qualified facility with in 3 hours of where I currently live. There are HPSA's in my area, but not at the level 14 and above they are looking for. I can not relocate as I have kids in school and own a house. I called HRSA and they told me that if I do not find a job within 6 months than I would default and owe the government the money, which would be over $50,000.
Even though receiving this scholarship would help me while I am in school, I think that in the long run it's not the best choice for me. I will be in more debt when I leave school but will have the freedom to work where I want and not have the stress of finding a job in a qualified facility. Best of luck to everyone!
Find Shortage Areas: HPSA by State & County
You can look by state and county or put in an address. The score has to be above 14 in order to qualify. I have a very large facility that is close to me that have a score of 12 but does not qualify. Also, the scores change yearly. So a site that qualifies now may not qualify when you graduate.
I can't be that flexible as I have kids in school and I don't want to move them. I have been stressing over this for a week and am happy with my decision to decline the award. It is a lot of pressure to graduate, pass NCLEX and find a job in 6 months, let alone a job in a qualified facility.
