How do you pay for School

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I have been taking pre-req's for a two years while working. This Spring of 2014, I will be applying for nursing school at my local community college (Saint Louis Community College). My local community college has a 2 year waiting period and I will only need 3 to 2 more classes after this Spring Quarter 2014 to be able to apply for a BSN program as well.

I really want my nursing degree and have been paying out of pocket for all my education so far. However, the only thing holding me back from applying for the BSN program is the cost at UMSL (Univ of Missouri of Saint Louis).

How does everyone pay for school? I have yet to take out a loan but its seems that would be my only option. What do you guys/gals do for money for your education in Nursing?

Dallas I will be applying to them all. However, I want STLCCMC more due to my location in the bi-state area.

Thanks, Its nice to know I am not the only one paying for everything out of pocket. I'll actually fill out the forms this year to see if I qualify for PELL or anything. Thanks for the information.

I work part time at a doctors office and have financial aid. Next semester I'm applying for a scholarship. I also joined the NSNA (National Student Nurses Association) - they have different scholarships available based on need merit, etc. I will be applying for those also since I still have to pay a portion of tuition :([/quote']

Remember that this deadline is jan 14. Make sure to apply.

Student loans for my ADN and BSN programs. Currently in DNP program, and I'm paying out of my earnings as I go.

I am paying for everything out of pocket. I work full time as an ER Paramedic and my wife is in education. My first semester was 4 hours and was around $1000 with books. The Fall semester was around $3500-4000 for 14 hours with books. The Spring semester will probably be around $4000 for 15 hours with books. I don't receive any federal aid due to our incomes and I can't get any scholarships due to my poor GPA from my first trip through college. My GPA was a 2.25 when I started back and now it's up to a 2.70. I had a 4.0 and a 3.57 these last two semesters. My wife and I decided that we did not want anymore student loans until I got into Graduate school for CRNA. She is still paying on her undergrad student loans but paid out of pocket for her master's. Once I get accepted to the nursing program in the Summer I will be eligible for a $1500 scholarship from my work.

Financial Aid covered my prereqs, but I will need to take out federal loans for the actual nursing program. I despise loans. I will be applying to every single scholarship I can get my hands on!

I had you all foot my bill through nursing school. ;)

...through the G.I. Bill, which I earned by serving in the world's finest Navy.

Federal student loans for me. And despite it being a community college, we're actually charged a separate rate other than the regular non-nursing specific courses. Totally surprised me, here I thought I could wing it with my income, but it turned out to be around 5K a semester. 2 year program, I'm looking at 20K and that's not including the books and materials, which I pay out of pocket since I can afford those. And then BSN...

Financial Aid and federal student loans.... luckily my job pays loans off while you are working there once you are done with school :)

I paid by check....:-) I know, its not funny; or maybe it is. Okay, let me stop joking around. My job paid for all my pre-reqs and my AA degree in Liberal Arts and now im paying out of pocket for my ADN. I tried to apply for grants/scholarships but they laughed at me saying i make to much money. I wish it was true.

I pay for school with the salary I earn from the job I went to school to get. I financed my education with loans and am still paying for it, almost 7 years later.

My sister was able to get tuition reimbursement from the hospital where she worked (in the cafeteria). There was also a scholarship offered through this same hospital for employees or family members of an employee.

Do you work in a hospital or have a family member who does???? :)
