How was Nurses Week celebrated at your Facility

Nurses General Nursing

I know these are difficult financial times. To acknowledge Nurses Week at our facility, someone taped a sheet of paper outside a door leading to our unit that said "HAPPY NURSES WEEK".

That was all. Not that we needed to have a luxurious luncheon or flowers or candy. This was a computer generated sheet with the words. I guess at least it wasn't handwritten in magic marker and the words were spelled correctly.:loveya:

I'll have some Jack if they'll put it in some lemonade for me! Oooh, I have some lemonade in the freezer and some Jack in the cabinet... yum!

We were offered free facial waxing and 1 minute hand massages with Sea Salt stuff, by our DON's daughter and friend. It was quite nice, actually. I was shocked and awed. You should've seen all the nurses and CNA's running around all night with red, puffy faces. lol:loveya::yeah:

It was brief, but to the point. In the final analysis it did what it was supposed to do without all of the bells and whistles we had come to expect.

It was, then it wasn't. Had a wonderful recognition ceremony for everyone..i.e. exceptional nurses in a variety of areas, then of course, nurse of the year for the facility and other categories...all really nicely done. It was funny and fun and sweet. But then...it stopped and we all went away, bewildered????

I entered the nursing exemplar contest..submitted 3 separate stories..all were well received, one of these 3 was chosen..another 16 people also submitted their exemplars and we were all recognized and this was also very nicely done...I really enjoyed the presentations and meeting everyone who were being recognized. Our hospital administrators were pretty cool and we met our new CEO, a woman who is also a physician.

I found out our hospital will be publishing or making a "book" of our exemplars..I'm not sure how this will work out...I submitted several of my exemplars, written for my hospital, to allnurses.com for 2007 & 2008..One of them was over the top :imbar. I think these are also going to be included. By the way..one of these I sent to allnurses.com was entitled "Who Knew?" the dark side of nursing... I reworked it, BIG TIME, renamed it "Reflections through the looking glass" and submitted it for 2008 and won again.....second year in a row. Clearly this rather creepy exemplar (I had a bad year!!) had potential. This was nurses week for me.

All in all..we know who we are, we have our friends and colleagues, our own cheering section for what we do each and every day. Our patients and families generally care for us as much as we do for them. I am so very fortunate to work where I work and am blessed working with such a great group of people.

My only participation in these events has been the exemplar writing. And its been rewarding.

Can't wait until next year, I've already resumed writing..have nearly 30 years to catch up on.

O.K Bye for now.

A facial I can understand but offering facial waxing? That just sounds wierd. Is facial hair a big problem in your facility? lol

We were encouraged to plan things for each other..pot luck, etc. Give 5$ for somethings...a cake was brought in but working nights I didn't get anything. A hand written thank you card from our managers. Hospital gave bookmark/card..and instead of hospital celebrations of food, gifts, etc. money was donated to the fund to help fellow employees in need. That was ok. Akareasie

One of the day CNAs in the LTC I work in actually brought in a large homemade cake this morning, it was so nice! She looked right at me and said, take some home with you! Wowee, I thought, night shift never gets anything! I took a nice sized slice back with me, and the first slice at that :)

LOL Unfortunately, YES! I just got my eyebrows waxed but a few others had their chins/upper lips waxed. I, personally, would never do that because that's what cream bleach was invented for but to each their own. :D The night shift nurses all pooled our money and bought our CNA's pizza and supplied drinks. We do that regularly, though. Our CNA's mean a lot to us and I buy them drinks all the time, just to tell them that I appreciate their help. Nurses' Week should be everyday! I thank my CNA's at the end of every shift and throughout the shift, everytime they point out a skin issue or tell me that a resident hit their call bell and requested something. :loveya:

We got nothing to our outpatients department, but there was an event in the hospital. (Australia) But this week on the bus, I got a thank you and how great nurses are speech,

Well, after they took away our tiny merit increases and they stopped contributing to our 401's we got a cheap pen...so much for Nurse's Week.

It wasn't. Not a word said.
