am currently a dns of a snf. i've been there for 8 months....been dns for only 3....if i get the job i want elsewhere, how much notice do all y'all think is proper? i thought 4 weeks, but my friend who has been a nurse forever and is very wise tells me i really only have to give 2 weeks because i've been there for less than a year.

ps. wish me luck getting the new job!

The places I've been ask for at least 4 weeks notice for any professional and 2 weeks for nonprofessional. Good luck with getting your new job!

Sending good wishes your way :)

I've read your posts and sensed that you were becoming increasingly frustrated over your job. I sincerely hope that you find satisfaction elsewhere.

As for giving notice, I suggest you refer to your HR policy and procedure manual. Although you have not worked for this organization for a long time, you are in a key position that may not be easily filled. If they specify 4 weeks, I recommend that you do your best to meet that request. You will leave on good terms, and demonstrate to your new employer that you will not "bail out" and leave an employer on short notice.

Minimum 4 weeks for any Nursing Professional position, especially mgmt. Have seen some Senior Mgmt positons requesting 2-3 months notice to provide for continuity of care.

I would suggest you talk to your employer to see what, if any, policy they have for resignations. If you are leaving for a better opportunity and not some type of conflict, I suggest you try to abide by their wishes, assuming they are doable and reasonable.

I'm new to nursing but two weeks notice is the standard outside of nursing with the exception of company executives.

Two weeks is the standard at my facility.

:yeahthat:

My position requires 3 months.

All other management positions, 4 weeks.

Good luck!

I have no idea on anything but corporate two week notice. But how is anyone ever supposed to leave giving months of notice? The new place can't hold a job open that long.

It is job specific in management, but rule of thumb is always at least equal to the amount of vacation time that you get per year. If you get four weeks, then it is four weeks notice. Two weeks, and two weeks notice.

And for manangement positions, if they really want you, they will hold the position. They do not expect anyone to instantly quit their job and be available to the new employer immediately.

If you look at it from the management point of view, what would be your feelings if this nurse would not give much notice to leave you in the future?

I've just never heard of anyone being that indispensible. And my managers never gave more than two weeks notice. But then, I was always in a corporate office up until now, so I don't know the niceties.

Not that I am indispensable, but my employer waited 3 months after I gave notice.
