How much do I need to know about sports?

I don't watch sports. The closest thing to sports I am interested in is grifball.

But it seems like every guy in the world has something to say about sports. Since alcohol isn't allowed in the hospital, it has become the de facto ice-breaker in male bonding. My lawyer friend tells me that I need to know at least something about this stuff to get ahead. I thought I picked this career to avoid insincere networking.

So how much does one such as I, an owner of testicles, have to know about this social phenomenon known as sports?

I don't know jack about sports, but I like to work on motorcycles in my spare time, so that gives me something to talk to male patients about. Especially if there is a motorcycle magazine laying out.

No interest in sports here...

Bikes, cars, fishing, hunting, computers, math, physics, women, dogs, airplanes, farming, working out, ...there's plenty to talk about aside from sports.

Women like to talk about fishing, motorbikes, etc. too...

How is math a conversational topic?

"Boy, I remember the day that ole teacher drug out the quadratic equation. I didn't have a clue. I thought she was talking about some new character from x-men."

Is that about it?

I pretty much stick with football. I like baseball, but I fall asleep watching it without fail. ESPN is a totally awesome channel though. In fact, tv watching is a big hobby of mine. I also like guns, shooting, and other outdoorsy crap. I'd like to say I like golf, but I don't. I have no clubs, but I have an aresenal of polo shirts. I want to get into it but can't. I'm more interested in driving the golf cart around yelling "fore!" That tends to cause trouble though. Usually I don't get invited back.

I think you're referring to games like baseball, basketball, and that thing with the hard plastic thing. How about rock climbing, mountain biking, paragliding, and martial arts? Forget fitting in, do your own thing and be excellent to each other!

havent read any of the thread but the title...if you have to ask this question i think you have an image issue. Most people in the hospital will not care about your interest or lack of interest in sports, you just may have less in common to talk about with doctors and other co-workers.
