I don't watch sports. The closest thing to sports I am interested in is grifball.
But it seems like every guy in the world has something to say about sports. Since alcohol isn't allowed in the hospital, it has become the de facto ice-breaker in male bonding. My lawyer friend tells me that I need to know at least something about this stuff to get ahead. I thought I picked this career to avoid insincere networking.
So how much does one such as I, an owner of testicles, have to know about this social phenomenon known as sports?
I've stopped caring about my bracket, too. Kansas' probably gonna win the whole thing anyways.....
I specifically kept Kansas from winning in my bracket - then again, I did my undergrad at UofI, so I'm a wee bit biased.
My fantasy bracket had Georgetown in the Elite Eight. Apparently that bracket is aptly named.

Man what a day of upsets. My bracket went to hell real quick. I have KU taking it all cause well, Im from real close to there. All i know is Im winning the bet between me and my gf with our brackets so thats all that matters.
I would assume you would need to know more about nursing than sports, but thats just me lol. Got a local college team? Where I live (SC) you are one of two people; a clemson fan or a usc fan, and if you are neither then you are not be from here originally. We are big on college football here in SC. Just pick one sport to start with, and dont go out of your way and stay up all night studying it. The main thing people are concerned about when it comes to sports is who won or lost and whos playing who, oh, and the score. Who knows? Maybe you'll find a sport you really get into and can learn fairly easily like I did with football. And no offense, but ur lawyer friend is just silly. I mean, how many people know if Bill Gates is a Packers fan or a Colts fan? I've never seen him at a Lakers game (not that I've ever been into basketball) or sitting roadside at NASCAR (again, don't watch it either, but I'm sure I would have heard about it from one of the 10 million people here in SC who are devout fans). Try it out and have some fun!
I think sports are stupid and could never bring myself to care enough about them to talk with people about it (no disrespect to anyone who does like them however).
Personally, I don't understand why you would need to know anything about them in the first place. Just focus on your patient care

There is more to life than nursing, ya know.

I'm neither a car guy, a sports guy. I like them both, but if either are mentioned I don't spring into action to reveal my extensive knowledge to make one comfortable, or impressed. In my opinion, your knowledge of the human body is much more important and practical, as apposed to who won what game or which new chevy model has the most horsepower, yet has great gas mileage. If anything, being "ignorant" in either subjects is a benefit in itself. If you don't know, you don't have to live up the stereotypical role of a what a guy is supposed to be. Ofcourse you can keep up-to-date with the paper, or as I do, with Yahoo news on the main page. I don't even read the articles, just the headlines. Ultimately, I believe people would rather you know how to stick em' with little pain, or how to tone down the medical jargon, and talk to them like simple people, or simply, help them become more comfortable in an uncomfortable place, which can be done with extensive knowledge in cars, sports, or manly stuff.
Well, personally, I don't expect every guy I run into to be interested into "manly stuff". My brother is the same way. He's nothing like me in that sense, yet we still can connect with each other with other things going on the the world. It's just easy for guys to find common ground with each other with sports, cars, etc. And of course, knowing what to do in your job is more important, but talking about these things doesn't hurt, either....
