How much did Excelsior program cost you total? For those that have completed program

Published

Just wondering. I am trying to add up the costs. I hear from some it should take $5000, and for others $7000, and for yet some others $12000! Well, what is it??? What did it average those of you that finished the program?

Graduated in 2005. Spent around $4,000. Used only free EC study guides. I know many people that spent a lot more, but it was always due to paying fees to the publishing companies.

Nah, some of us had to retake the CPNE.

Since I failed my cpne it will cost me just under 6 grand I had all my pre reg's except the info to lit.

I posted this a while back .... bear in mind that tuition goes up every July 1, so some of these prices are older.

Info Lit..........$260

Enrollment......$895

Annual Fee.....$440

Classes.......$2,645

CLEP tests.....$160

CPNE..........$1,825

Grad fee........$495

Total...........$6720

I took Info Lit in 2006, so it was a little less expensive then. "Classes" includes NC1 through NC7 (including NC2), A&P, Micro, AND all the practice exams for each of those exams. The CLEP tests were Human Growth & Development (accepted in place of Lifespan Dev. Psych.) and Introductory Sociology. Each CLEP test was $65 plus a $15 site fee at the university where I took the exams. (I guess I could have applied for reimbursement for the CLEPs, but that thought didn't occur to me until just now. Duh...)

I was VERY fortunate to receive a $3K scholarship in May 2007 from the Ladies Board at the hospital where I work, and my employer reimbursed me for the CPNE ahead of time (thank goodness I passed, or it would have eaten at least a paycheck and a half -- you have to pay my employer back immediately if you fail, and they'll take it out of your paycheck first!!). I took A&P as my first exam, before I got my scholarship, and my employer reimbursed me for that as well. So out of my pocket, I only paid for Info Lit, the enrollment, the A&P practice test, and the CLEPs. Total for me: $1375. Can't beat that! :D And I actually had a $260 credit with EC -- a small surplus from my scholarship -- so my graduation cost $235 (program completion fee of $495 minus the $260).

Oh, and I did spend some dough on workshops, too ... probably $800 or so.

I am estimating that I have spent about $8000. That including enrollment fees, books, test, study guides, workshops, CPNE, travel expenses and then some.

This is something I don't like to think about but since you asked...and I'm just gonna round off the top of my head.

I went to The College Network for books

TCN Books $5000

Tests (11 at 220 each) $2420

CPNE (which I take this weekend) $1900

Lynns Workshop $400

Flight to Dallas (workshop) $340

Flight to CPNE $360

Other books, cds, and items along the way prob another $300

Info lit $240

Excelsior Registration $800

Excelsior renewal (x2) $880

Hotels $450

So I guess I'm a little over $13,000 and 2 and a half years as long as I pass.

Then I'm still gonna get hit with graduation fees, application to state board of nursing fee, and I'm sure a few others before I'm completed here.

Painful...

and I was in between jobs so this has all been out of pocket costs.
