How much do CNA's make these days and is the pay worth the workload?

Published

Now I know it will be hard work, that I am prepared for...

However, since I have been interested in becoming a CNA while going through nursing school I have heard everything from positive experiences to horror stories. One girl told me CNA's basically deal with the nastiest aspects of nursing and for the lowest pay. She told me I would be changing adult diapars all day for $7/hr.

Now I don't mind changing adults, but I at least need to know I can pay my bills if I take this job.

Also a local hospital offers paid training to become a PCT, so maybe if it's truly "paid" I should go for that instead....?

Suggestions?

yeah, cna pay depends a lot on what state ur n and the population served.

My first CNA job was right after I finished the program (not certified or state tested) and I had no previous CNA experience.

My base rate was $9.98 per hour. The shift differential was $1.55 every night because I worked night shift. I also made an additional $1.55 on top of that for weekends. Additionally, there were tons of opportunities to work overtime at time and a half. I sometimes worked 4-5 twelve hour shifts a week and made a ton of $$$.

I was also informed....NO shift differentials.and the only holidays they observe are Christmas,Thanksgiving and July 4.....lol and of course they put me to work on Labor day already...9am-9m.....oh well I hope I really enjoy this job other wise.:p

Wow... that's crazy. I can get up to an extra $3.10 per hour with shift differentials. Are you able to easily pick up extra shifts to make x1.5?

We observe 6 holidays a year and are required to work 2 of them per year. We have our holiday work schedule through 2011. We make x1.5 for the entire 12 hour holiday shift we work and if we don't work a holiday, we get paid for 8 hours at our base rate.

For the 4th of July, I made $9.98 per hour watching fireworks :)

Here in Las Vegas CNAs in the nursing home make between $11 - $14/HR to start

It really is a shame that people who go to school for training can't make more than a high school student.

I was recently hired as a rehab nursing tech in southern TN area. I work PRN nights and am making $13.00 an hour and sometimes it is more depending on whether it is the weekend or not. I say keep looking for a better wage, they are out there.

1. A two week class doesn't really count as much "training"

2. At least here, you don't have to be a high school graduate to work as a CNA

I am mostly thinking of MAS who have to go to school 15+ months just to end up with about minimum wage.

Specializes in VA-BC, CRNI.

Arizona the pay is around $12 to $16 on average.

Out where I am in NC the pay is around 8 dollars an hour. Its sad that one can make more money flipping burgers then helping take care of an elderly person.

My facility doesn't offer night differential. We get time and a half for certain holidays. Then my facilility decided to put off yearly raises until next year, so I won't get a raise until next Spring unless I'm promoted. If you want more money, you have to work more hours. Most of the time it's not even worth. At least for me it isn't because I don't have kids. But you gotta do what you gotta do.
