How was microbiology for you? Grade for you? Topics covered?

I just finished micro and got a B. Labs were fun/hard. Make sure everything goes smoothly - if you mess up on your unknown! How was the class itself for you? Hard//easy? I'm wondering if our topics covered were different. What did you cover in pathogens?

I'm taking it right now, and having fun! In my last few labs, we practiced all the basic skills by going around campus and collecting, culturing, and differential staining samples we collected. (I focused on drinking fountains -- holy bacilli, Batman!)

The way the rest of my semester is organized is that we're learning about all types of pathogens by covering diseases by body system. One chapter is respiratory pathogens, one digestive, etc etc, plus covering immune responses to each. Not sure if that's a unique approach, but our prof tailored the course for nursing students.

I hate to admit it but Micro was a blur for me. I was 9 months pregnant by the Final (in fact feeling contractions to take my final)! My teacher was really cool with helping me out with the class and moving me along despite my missed classes. Our book though even without his help really was "micro for dummies". It guided you right along and so long as you followed it step for step you were guarenteed to get your unknown correct. The tests didn't seem to difficult although I took it about 2 years ago so it has been a while. I did end up with an A.

I got an A in microbiology. But I can't say I enjoyed it. It was a required class, so I took it. Probably got more stressed out by it than I should have, as usual. It was the last pre-req I took before starting nursing school. Wasn't that long ago, but it's hard to remember much about it. There was theory and then lab right after, so it was a long class. The teacher was cool and very laid back. We did the usual stuff, the unknowns and etc. I think I remember feeling lost a great deal of the time, but managed to figure it out along the way. Wouldn't want to repeat it. But at this point, I'm burned out on school and wouldn't want to repeat basket weaving.

Microbiology was fun. For me it was just a repeat of college biology with the addition of growing bacteria. We grew glow in the dark E. coli which was interesting. Got an A with little effort, probably because it was a repeat.

I thought Micro was fun & interesting. I had a couple personal things come up (deaths & births in the family, sickness, I also work 40 hours a week, married with 2 girls-ages 11 & 13) but I ended up getting a B-. With my other 2 classes, I ended up with a 3.5 GPA for the semester. Works for me. :)

Took it in fall of 2012. Mine was supposed to be to be an extremely hard class. First two tests got below an 80. Other tests I got a 90 or better on. Had an A in lab, and got my unknown on the first test (so it wasn't bad for me). Did most of it on my own no tutor or anything. Professor was notorious for failing half the class. On our viruses we had to know each letter of the viruses or they were considered wrong if one letter spelled wrong. Got a B in the class, since half fail it I was happy with my B. It really wasn't that bad to me. I took an accelerated A&P course and to me that was more challenging and I still got a 94 in one and 95 in the other. I'm taking an accelerated Chemistry class now and that's a different story!

Organic Chemistry was the devil for me. I was ecstatic that I got a B-, considering that half of our class dropped & only a few people ended up with a B+ or better. We had a horrible professor for both lab & lecture.

Mine was pretty challenging. Learning anaerobic vs. aerobic, kreb cycles, history, where they are commonly found, transmission, incubation, prodromal, illness, and convalescent phases, early signs and symptoms, late signs and symptoms, tests, and treatments for each one. It was a lot to take in. Oh did I mention that it was a 4 week class and I was working 32 hours a week? That and I was having chronic migraines. I was just glad to pass the class! :drowning:

It's not something I thought I'd be interested in, but it was a lot of fun. Studying wasn't terrible; I never popped open my book. I just studied the powerpoints and handouts and I was gold. Of course, this will vary. And although it was fun and easy (don't know why I thought it was easy when my test grades were always mid 80s) I only came out with a B in lecture but an A in lab. That said, I absolutely could have put more effort in.

It was fun but I was unable to dedicate enough time to it because I ended up taking two classes at once. My instructor liked me because I'd answer questions.

Loved, loved, loved micro! We ran the gamut from bacteria to viruses to prions...prions are particularly fascinating to me and when I took genetics I did my research project on familial prion disease. Our micro instructor was/is an HIV researcher, so we covered a LOT of HIV info. I think I am the only person who loved the smell of the disinfectant in micro lab LOL (I embrace my weirdness ;) ) We had two unknowns for lab, and even though I got one wrong I ended up with an A both in theory and in lab. Most people hated micro and only took it because it's required, but I find it terribly interesting...all those little tiny creatures that can wreak so much havoc and others that we can't live well without!
