How many don't make it out?

I'm am curious as to the numbers of nursing students who do not last until the end of the program. The school that I am applying to accepts 80 each fall and I am wondering how likely it is that all 80 will cross the stage. Could some of you who are in nursing school or already finished tell me how many of your classmates didn't make it through the program?

We started with 50 and are down to 11 original students (not counting those who transferred in) in our final semester. A handful decided nursing wasn't for them. One busted a drug test, 3 failed 2 clinical rotations and the rest failed classes. About 10 or so are in the classes behind me now. Ours is recognized as the toughest course around, but we are also known to put out the best nurses.

This cannot be serious...only 11 students?!?! That is crazy.:uhoh3:

I have not been on here in a while, but I just completed first semester in May and we started out with 63 students. Going into second semester we will have 44 so we dropped 19 in one semester.

Yes, I am very serious. It's not ridiculous either. I am not finding it impossibly hard. Tough and challenging,yes, but it something that I really want also. This course is not by any means impossible to pass, but at the same time you are not going to float through it either. It takes dedication and hard work. Of the students that are left, I can't think of one that is not focused and determined to pass:) I have faith that we are all going to make excellent nurses too. If nursing is what you want to do, you can do it. I personally love it and have wanted this all of my life. I will graduate Aug 1,'06. I can't wait!!!

My program has a 100% pass rate for the NCLEX. What I dont know is how many actually make it to the end. That isnt something that my school readily admits too. They are very committed to our success though.

We are assigned a "Mentor" on the day of orientation and that instructor stays with us during the entire program. They review our test scores and if we are not doing well, they intervene and find ways to help you study.

I do know that this past semester we had 223 applicants and only 80 were chosen. AND LPN's, Paramedics and Resp Therapists have first refusal.

They will not even look @ your transcript unless you have completed Micro and A&PII before application. The only pre-reqs they allow during the program are Nutrition and Human Development.

I know 4 people that were accepted as "Alternates" and are now accepted in the program. The orginal accepted students must not have passed fingerprinting or drug testing.

I was told by a 2nd yr student that the drop out rate is 50%, but I don't know how true that is. I just know that it is hard work and you have to be determined in order to do well. As another poster mentioned, this is not a scholastic choice that will allow you to just "skate" thru. And I don't want a nurse that just "skated thru" treating me anyway. I want him/her to be as knowledgeable as possible, because I'm counting on their help!

I just completed my first year we started with 36 and lost 3 from our 2 year ADN program. One student had SEVERE test anxiety and the other two really struggled with the material. As you all know, it flies fast & furious.

Try to focus on your goals, and stay on top of your assignments. Also, use a comprehensive NCLEX review book as a study guide prior to the tests. This helped me tremendously!!!

We started with 36 and we are down to 30. That includes a transfer from a another school in the second semester. I have a gut feeling that we will be down two more when we start back in August.

Is that correct? Because our school which is one of the city colleges of chicago is sooooo bad. We had 40 plus student finished the program and only 13 passed the Hesi exam. This school is all political, in my opinion the city colleges of chicago is so disorganized and do not care about their students. When you have over 50 students complaining about the same thing - lack of faculty support, subjective policies, non functional equipment, no tutors, and resources center closed 90% of the time and a teacher being terminated for shredding students scantrons and changing their grades, racial comments than something is wrong. When you have 30 plus students testifying in court about the damages that were done to them and preventing the students from graduating on time, than something is wrong. When the school favors students over other students by allowing some students to take an Exit exam four, five and six times and other students to take only 2 or three times with forcing them to sign a contract than something is wrong with the program.

When you spend three years sacrificing, studying hard, spending lots of monies on your education and end up were we are than something is wrong.

My sister is in a program in Va. that accepts 50 and usually graduates 15.

It's tough out there but you need to ask yourself how bad do you want it ? If you want it bad enough, you'll usually put forth the extra effort required to get you through. JMHO!

we started with 65 i believe..and now we have like 53 and its our junior year

In my first semester of nursing school we started out with 62 and at athe end of the semster we had 35. A few quit but most of them failed out. The tests we took were all on the computer with questions worded like the NCLEX, they were timed and once you answered a question and hit next you couldn't go back to any of your previous questions. If you failed with a 74% or below once you had a second chance to take the test and it was so much harder than the first test. That semester out of 50 senior students that started 4 semesters ago only 17 got pinned. It is very competitive and we got told last week for our spot in the program there was 20 other people that didn't make it and we are a class of 70.

I'm not sure about our school, but I know they try like crazy to keep us from failing.

nursemi, that is just awful. The large nursing teacher shortage really is showing through on some of these experiences people have had.
