How many books do you have to buy?

Published

This is mostly for LPN students since that is the program I am starting. Everybody else is welcome to reply:) But, don't include your books for A&P, college math, microbiology, etc. I just want to know about the books you have to buy that are for nursing courses. Also, how much are these costing you guys? My jaw dropped when I saw my total for books close to $1000:stone I am used to the $200 to $250 price range I've been at for the past year. I am also used to carrying around 3 maybe 4 books at the most to all of my classes. I have to tote around 23 books this year. They told us we would need every single one, so we need to invest in a huge book bag with rollers. Ha! Caaaaaaaaaaaan't wait:chuckle

I don't know yet, but I know there will be extra books, like the dictionary, drug book, etc...etc....

I just wish I could GET my books so I couls start looking at them!

Lts see...7 required books, 3 recommended books for my first semester. Our bkstore marks textbooks up 25% and never has used books, so I bought mine online. Still need 1 recommended book, but for the 9 I have bought I've only spent about 300 bucks-amazon and half.com used books is where I shop. I also have to buy 2 "course packages" whatever those are and have to get them in the bookstore. So, I'll probably spend $400 total for books this semester-then I have to add about 4 per semester after this. I bought a roomy backpack on wheels this week at Target for 14.99! :)

Good question!

I have at least 11 books so far and that doesn't include little novels (at least 4 of those I can think of off the top of my head), or pocket guides that came with a couple of texts. That's for Patho, Assessment, Pharm, Cultural, Nursing Managament, and two other required classes so far. I haven't kept a tally and I probably don't want to know!!

For this Fall I'll have at least 2 more (those two will be about $150). For Spring I'll have another big set of expensive ones- med surg, etc., then still more each semester until I'm done, so yeah I'd say I'm going to end up with 23 texts or more.

Oh yeah I didn't include the APA manual, the NCLEX review book, or the Dosage Calcs Made Incredibly Easy books I bought either.

We have to have 13 books and the price they gave us for all of them was around $600.00. This is for the first semester--the next four semesters, books run between $30 to $100. This first one will be the worst!

I have just one thing to say to you.... ok so anyone who knows me knows that I NEVER just have one thing to say but one IMPORTANT thing to say...

that is where I get my books for school if I can get away with it.

I am finishing my junior level nursing courses of my BS in nursing and I get a list of books for school and rush online to see if I can get my books there. I save TONS by buying used books from other people who have already taken the classes and don't need theirs anymore.

Most of our books were expected for our sophomore level classes (800.00 worth) and from then on we use them as reference and the only new books that need to be bought are the ones for the individual classes. I have also discovered that it's wise to talk to students who have had the class before because there are MANY classes where the instructor tests ONLY from the notes and books are not required(the instructors wont tell you that you'll have to get that info from past students). You will still need to buy the reference books for clinical research but for individual classes..... ask someone first before you dish out the money ........ that you could be spending on CAFFINE through the semester to keep you awake while you study.

GOOD LUCK to all

As a first-year (LOL making me think I'm a Hogwart's student here), I got hammered with the book list, but most of them I've used throughout the rest of the program. I think I bought 15 books at the beginning but as someone else said, one was a medical dictionary, one was a drug guide, etc. I've also purchased care plan books, NCLEX review books, etc, but those were on my own, not required.

Specializes in ICU, CM, Geriatrics, Management.

Our list is comparable to many others'... around 15 to 20 books, including optional ones. School budgets their cost at about a thousand bucks.

Only a few additional volumes may be required for our second year (ADN).

Specializes in Pediatrics.

Only 9, I think. Our school gets a lot of state funding, though, so some books we need are actually loaned to us. That takes a HUGE chunk out of the cost! 4_1_113.gif

I won't know how many books that I'll have to purchase until I buy my syllabus on Monday....the booklist is in the syllabus....everybody is trying to make money.... :stone. We were told to expect to spend a minimum of $800 and that most of the books will be utilized throughout the 2 yrs...which is a good think. My professor did tell us the titles of the 3 of the books that we will not need until Spring 2005....one of the books cost $159 :uhoh3:

I went and bought my 300 pg. syllabus yesterday.... :uhoh3:, and the booklist was included....I have to purchase 15 books that are required and I would like to purchase 3 more books that may be helpful...

I am in the RN program and the total cost for my books for the Fall semester is about $650.

I am in a BSN program. 4 years and all finished as I say. My second year was the worst. I had 10 books, but it was the first of my clinicals and all that jazz. I saved up for my books that should tell you something! :) It will get better your junior and senior year. Most of the books that you need will be repeats of other classes.
