How long did it take for you to get your RN?...

Published

....including all pre-reqs and nursing school or diploma?

i dont think its the RNs u should worry about. Doctors look down on other people. i've seen it happen. i think rns and lpns should be the best of friends (lol). they can learn a lot from each other if u ask me. doctors r the ones that treat u like crap.

Lindsay,

Do RNs look down on LPNs in the hospital or other settings? I would like to pursue this but I don' want to be ssen as their less-educated b*tch. Ya know?

Specializes in My first yr. as a LVN!.

Sometimes LVN/LPN programs throw in the pre-reqs as part of the core curriculum...although when you go to the bridge LVN-RN route none of those usually are transferrable so it is wise to get pre-preqs @ a community college/ junior college because you will need those to get into the RN. I already have an AA degree, not in nursing but a general Liberal Arts, have taken pre-reqs and my LVN schooling is 14 mths. If I wasnt running obstacles being a single mom, and all the responsibilities... I could have done everything in ...

14 mths LVN

8-12mths LVN-RN (not including of course if you have to sit on a wait list)

And pre-reqs usually take up to a year ... about 4 yrs to get a RN ... Im almost there, and boy oh boy has it been a LONGGGGG journey. In the meantime though I go my CMA back in 2003 and have been getting all of my experience .. so by the time I am a LVN I have gained extensive knowledge and hands on exp.

4.5 years for my ADN...including all pre-req's (133 credits total)

hmm when i first started in 1989 I went for two years...one year of prereqs and sciences and then another semester of clinical and then half a semester and withdrew for health.

Started back in 97 or 98 to just finish up liberal arts degree since I had enough to almost do it and finished that in 99.

Then went back to nursing program in 2004, and graduated in 2006.

Seventeen years if you keep a running tab......with a long break in the middle lol

I have a BA, but no previous science background. It took me 2 semesters to get all pre-req's done (my school also has waitlists for A & P, and Micro). 1.5 years on the waiting list, and 2 years of school...

So, actually, it took me longer for my ADN than it did for my BA, but this degree I actually turned into a job!

i'm in the exact same situation! i finished my BA in 2004, did one year of pre-reqs, wait list for 2 years & now i'm JUST starting my program in the fall.

it'll take me five years from start to finish (including the wait list) for my ADN when it only took me three years for my BA. :uhoh3:

About 2.5 years for nursing school total, but I have a previous Bachelors degree.

* 1 year for my LPN program

* 6 months to finish up my pre-reqs

* 1 year for my LPN-RN program

Hi There!

I am trying to do what you did or at least try and get into a program. I have a bachelors in communication but now I am trying to see if I could hack nursing. Was it difficult? How long after your first degree did you decide to go back and get nursing? What advice would you give me starting up?

Thank you ...

Hi I have a bachelors in psychology (Class of December 06) & will began nursing school this august 07. It will take me 22months!!!!

Specializes in ortho/neuro/general surgery.

did 1 year of pre-reqs straight out of high school, then quit to get married, 6 years later decided to go back and a lot of my credits were still good, did 1 year of pre-reqs that I still needed then got through the waiting list and got in after only waiting 8 months, the LPN program took me 1 year- 4 semesters counting summer, and then the RN program took me another 2 semesters- so in total it took me about 4 years and I was 28 when I graduated

Four years - but two of them were part-time. I actually started out to be a pharmacist, but after the first year of pre-req's, I took a look at the years of schooling, and the money it would cost.

My chemistry professor suggested I look into the nursing program when I talked to him about it, and everything I'd taken transferred.

Specializes in Peds, ER/Trauma.

Took me 5 years to get my BSN- but an extra year of that is because I switched majors after my first year, and transferred from the Univ. of MN to the Univ. of WI- some of my credits didn't transfer.

Specializes in OB, M/S, HH, Medical Imaging RN.

I was an LPN for 23 years. I took a class here and there over a 7 year period. When I finally decided to finish up it took me one year through Regents, now Excelsior. I graduated in 2000. Passed boards March 2001.

Specializes in healthcare12 years.

well if you can get into a nursing program is the hardest part I did my preqs with my LPN at a college, the n I took a transition class so 3 years I was an RN
