How long did it take you to get a job?

Published

i just passed the nclex and got my license. i'm wondering how long does it usually take to get a job if one has no experience at all. will it be to my disadvantage that i'm a foreign grad?:nurse:

I just want to say thank you for your post, I am kind of in the same boat (foreign educated) and wonder if it is a disadvantage, especially since I am a new grad. And thank you to everyone for your replies, I am kind of nervous about not working for awhile.

hi! how's your job hunting? any interview yet? where are you located? i understand how you feel, it's been two weeks since i got my license and no calls yet. i know i have to be patient, there will be a place for us..i talked to one nurse recruiter and she informed me that they hire new grads even before they graduate.. some hospitals like Kaiser, conduct new grad program only twice a year. they have one in aug but all the positions are filled up already. The next will be in December and they start hiring in October or November..I don't think i can wait that long..i want and i need to work soon...goodluck to us:redpinkhe

Its funny, some of my friends got a job in a few weeks and some of them could not get one for over 3 months. It depends.

do you have any idea what your friends did to get a job right away? i hope i don't wait for months..i know that i can be hired in a nursing home but i read in one of the forums that it's better to start in the hospital..

To the OP,

did you apply online? did you follow -up. The only thing is some areas have a nursing glut but since you have your license and an immigrant visa, you should be able to get a job without problems.

maybe you can start out at a not so big hospitals just to get your feet wet and then move on when you have some experience under your belt.

The other thing is that you could wait but if you've worked your tails to get your license, i think the earlier you start reaping your benefits, the better.

i hope you find a job soon. keep looking and ask around.

Good for you!!!! I'm sure you'll love it. Don't be nervous, you'll do great! Just remember that you don't learn everything in school so take in as much information as you can from orientation. How long do you get for orientation?...So far, it is going good for me! I love it so far:heartbeat the kids are just soooo cute and sweet. However, yesterday I got a little frustrated because I had this 3 month old who wouldn't stop crying, and all day yesterday I felt so stupid because he had a tetratrology of fallot repair, and I understand the defect, but the repair and the complications it caused him afterward was pretty confusing so I spent most of the day looking up stuff. Of course, by the end of the day and after talking about it with my preceptor, I understood it more and felt a lot better. I am just really hard on myself though, and I've always been like that so my husband had to remind me that I'm not going to be perfect and that I'm not going to understand everything and thats the point of why I look things up and stuff. Lol, anyway, sorry for the ramble. I wish you the best of luck in your new career, and PLEASE keep me updated!!!! I would love to know how things go for you, even though I know you will do GREAT!!!!!:yeah:

Someone asked about where there's a glut. Here's a thread about that that's been ongoing:

I sent out a bunch of applications in mid/late June and had interviews by the first week in July and job offers during those interviews and I graduated last week.

I was VERY proactive with my applications and follow ups since I am moving.
