How long did it take you to get your first RN job?

Published

Hi everyone! Just curious about the timeline I can expect here, and about other people's experiences. How long did it take you to get an interview after first applying, and how long after your interview did you finally get a job offer? I'm a new grad RN (ADN) with no previous experience, and I am currently in southern CA but willing to move to a nearby state if I can get a job offer. I have applied both for local hospitals, other hospitals in CA, and hospitals in AZ, NV, and NM. I have applied online for over a hundred different positions in the past two weeks, but so far I haven't gotten any calls for interviews (lots and lots of rejection emails, though). I'm wondering how long it might take for me to actually get a job in a hospital, because financially speaking I can't really wait that much longer before I need to start earning money. Thanks!

Wondering if those of you who were hired had ADN, BSN, etc.?

I have an ADN and have had 2 job offers, and am applying to a third hospital system in the hopes of getting my dream job (I don't have my hopes up). There's only one hospital system in my area that prefers BSN graduates (they're magnet) and even they take ADN's.

I have an ADN and, by looking outside the box, I found a hospital job 1.5 months after passing NCLEX

I've seen you say this on several posts without any elaboration. I'm curious as to what exactly you did that was "outside the box." Care to share?

About a week of applying to 20+ hospitals.

3 hospitals in North Dakota called me back. I am working at the best one(according to usnews).

Hello krsiepoo,

Can you share with us how you managed to land that job? What do you man by thinking outside the box? I will be graduating with an ADN as well.

I am in pa, I got my job 3 months before graduation. The hospital here has also hired grads 6 months before graduation.

Hello ajw49886,

Where in PA are you working? Is it urban or rural? I am guessing that it gets easier to land that first job the further away one looks from any major city. Is that the case for you? Should I start my job hunt out in the countryside?

I work in Danville pa. It is a level one trauma center and it continues to purchase other hospitals left and right. It is rural but compared to classmates that got hired in a more urban area this hospital offered about 12,000 a year more.

Interviewed the Monday before my graduation, got a job offer 2 days later and it was my "dream job". Took NCLEX over a month later. Most people in my class (probably about 90%) had jobs before graduation. I only know of a couple who were still looking 4 or 5 months out.

I'm in the same position, I've had my license for a little over a month, applied to over 60 jobs and I have about 17 active applications. Definitely receiving the "Although you meet our qualifications..." blah blah blah not enough experience. I think it will just take time and depends on the past clinical work if any. It's so frustrating especially with all of the student loans etc. Just keep applying and keep your chin up, we're bound to get jobs sometime, I hope haha

It took me a little over a month to land my first job in a nurse residency program, but it was not without tons of legwork and rejection. I'm relocating cross-country and it's been tough to even get an interview with an out-of-state address. After about 15 rejections, I finally landed an interview for the new grad program that I flew down for (which was almost a disaster on it's own). The whole application process took about a month. I applied in late May, the interview was June 24th in Florida and I heard back just a few days ago that I was accepted to the program. If it weren't for this incredible program, there is no way I would have a job right now. I still have 8 resumes/applications that have been submitted (I can't retract them online, so I just follow them to see where they go lol) and several have been rejected within the last several days. I have another phone interview (which the poor woman wasn't super excited about having as she voiced she really doesn't like doing interviews over the phone) for a residency program that I will politely decline next week when she calls, but I don't think it was very promising from the get-go.
