How long does it take to get ADN including prerequisites, on average?

Published

Everything I've read says it takes two years to get your ADN. I'm wondering if that is the nursing program alone, or does the two years include your prerequisites?

it will be 3 years in total for me, however I did get into an 14 month accelerated adn program. On average for most is about 4 years.

Specializes in MSICU.

Like everyone said, it depends on where you start. I have a bachelors in another field so I had the general prereqs completed (english, math, ect), it is taking me one and a half years to complete my science prereqs (taking only 2 during full semesters and one over each summer because I only have the sciences to take and didn't want to overload myself), will be one semester of waiting, and then 2 full years to complete the nursing program.

So 4 years in total even though I did start at an advantage.

P.S. I will *hopefully* be in the concurrent enrollment program so after obtaining my ADN I continue with online theory work for another year and will get an MSN as well.

Hi there!!

Is there anyone here who can answer my few questions as I'm new to this field. Having difficulty to understand and find the school.

I want to become an RN for that which is the best way I should start with?

Is there any way I can do both prerequisites and ADN programs together? (any college list you know)

what is the most important thing I should know before getting into college?

Is there any way to start nursing college while doing prerequisites?

I'm sorry for all these questions as I didn't find online I had to ask here!

Any Recommendation, tips will be highly appreciated

The best route depends on a couple things, including where you are, what previous college you have, if any, finances and personal goals.

Every school has different admission requirements, so there’s no generic list. Start with researching local schools, community colleges as well as 4-year colleges/universities. If possible, stay away from for-profit schools (expensive, but sometimes can be a viable option), any school not accredited (will limit employment and future educational opportunities), and schools with low NCLEX pass rates (cuz you can’t be a RN if you can’t pass the NCLEX).

thank you so much for responding to me, beekee!

I have completed my high school an I'm currently living in Washington state. yeah, I think I need to start walking to some schools then I might come with something.! and did you mean non-profit or profit schools? again do you think prerequisites can be done in a year if I give full time?

it means a lot to me that you gave time to answer my question.

thank you ?

I went to Centralia College and Lower Columbia college for my pre-reqs due to the colleges in my area having different requirements to apply. I had to take 3 or 4 extra classes to apply to Lower Columbia College to be competitive. I am currently in the nursing program at Lower Columbia College and it is a great program, the instructors are top notch.

Where are you located?

I'm in Bellevue WA, which city you're in? here college is not so good as so many requirements as far in my research.

Is that college is in WA ?? what are their prerequisites requirements and how many pre-req you had?

I hope your study is going well !!!

Specializes in Mental Health.

3 1/2 for me because I never took chemistry in high school so that was an extra term.

I'm in Longview, WA. About 2.5 hrs south of you. I had to take a bunch of classes - Chemistry, statistics, A&P I & II, microbiology, basic biology, english 102, sociology, psychology 100 & 200, communications, nutrition, and a diversity course (I picked spanish). That's right off the top of my head, I don't have the paper in front of me. It seems like a lot but once you get started and are doing it - it's not that bad, especially if you like it.

Depends on your school. The pre-req for my college was that one had to obtain a degree in human biology in order to apply for the RN program. So, 2 years full-time to obtain your bio degree, then 2 years in the ADN program = 4 years altogether, but you did come out of it with 2 degrees.
