How long did you breastfeed your children?

I will start...I breastfed my son until just after his 3rd birthday.:)

My first child, 15 months (he just stopped one day and said, "All done.") and my second, 27 months. She would probably have gone on, but I figured it was time to stop when she put a carton of mile BACK on the shelf in the store and said she didn't need it.

About one week.....I was diagnosed with heart failure, PPCM and despite the overzealous LaLeche chick who told me it was "fine" to breastfeed my DD while taking Lasix, a beta blocker and an ACE, I decided to stop.

My daughter is now 6.5, we are wonderfully bonded, she is not overweight, she gets sick maybe once a year and has had waayyyyyyyyyyy less ear infections than some of my friends whose kids were exclusively breastfed.

Oh my...:chuckle ...yes, I'd agree it was time!

I did it exclusively for 4 months. Even with pumping, my supply slowed down once I returned to work. :( Now (at 6 months) we're nursing first thing in the morning & last thing at night.

Cagouly, that is so precious. I cried. Your kids sound so darling.

No medal :blushkiss

Wow, I thought I was the only American who did it for more than 6 months. And I'd have been lost if it hadn't been for La Leche League.

With all 4 of my kids, I nursed at least 2 years apiece. They were exclusively breastfed for 6 months, then I introduced cereal and bananas, which they all hated and spit out! That told me to keep nursing. After a couple of months, I re-tried the foods and they were now ready. But they continued to nurse even after beginning foods, including meats and vegetables. But by 2, they self-weaned.

Damn these ignoramus doctors and others who try to discourage us and who think they know more than we and our babies and the good Lord Himself do.

I also went to La Leche League meetings and found it extremely helpful. I purchased the book "The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding" and it was very helpful. It's also available in libraries for those who aren't able to invest in it. My son was the same about solid foods and turned his nose up at about everything until he was one years old.

We still love you :D

Weaned my son (lst child) a couple weeks ago, he turns 3 on feb 27. bfeeding was become painful d/t lack of milk supply, and I was tired of listening to my non-breasting mother-in-law whine about how gross and weird it was to still be breastfeeding at toddler age. He's still in mourning and I'm kind of sad too, but I guess we will get over it soon enough :sniff:

From the other replies, I'm glad to hear we're not freaks after all!

I guess a good breastfeeding support forum would have helped me a lot along the way, I just never thought about it.

I only did it until my son was 4 months old. He sprouted 4 teeth and refused to stop treating my nipples like chew toys. :uhoh21:

3 years in spite of the doctor's nursing repeatedly telling me I was "gross" and the doctor asking me "are you still nursing". Obviously I ignored them because he was also my husband's doctor early on and I needed him for that. I have tons of cancer on my dad's side of the family and was told that each day of breastfeeding was an extra bonus for my health (according to the oncologist.) My gynecologist and midwife were extremely supportive.

1st ds - 15 mos. 2nd ds - 13 mos. 3rd ds - 18 mos. 4th ds - 24 mos. dd - 11 months and still going strong.

I usually wait to introduce solids until they're grabbing food off everyone else's plate. I find the intermediate stage hard, when they're not getting full nutrition from bmilk anymore but they're still limited in what they can chew/digest. The nursing professionals say that breastmilk is more nutritious than any food you can offer, but my daughter whines from hunger and doesn't seem satisfied when I offer her just the breast.
