How is the Job Market in NYC right now?

Published

I'm a new LPN working in LTC and I expect to graduate in April '09. I'm going to a career fair next week. Do you think it's too soon to seriously start looking? By April '09 I will have a little over 1 year as an LPN do you think I will have an advantage over the other new grad RNs because of my experience?

I'm getting kind of nervous because I have been reading more than a few posts about new grad spots drying up.

You are going to a job fair now for a RN position next year?

I have to go to the fair...it's part of an assignment.

That is why I am asking if I should take it seriously and give out resumes or if it's just too early to worry about.

It's never too early to do research, but, IMO, it's definitely too early to give in your resume. I'm not a recruiter, so take my opinion with a grain of salt, but (unfortunately) not everyone who starts nursing school finishes it. There's so many applicants that have graduated and passed their boards right now, that i can't imagine that a recruiter would start interviewing people that havent started the RN program yet.

There's certainly no harm in networking, but i think it would be too early to give out resumes.

Take it seriously, why not? What do you have to lose? Make it a practice run.

I'm already an LPN and I am currently in an RN program and I will graduate in early Spring '09.

Take it seriously. Why not, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Go to the job fair and collect all the info from all the employers. Most recruiters recommend interviewing one to two months before you plan to take the NCLEX.

Ask the recruiters for suggestions. Good luck.

I have a few friends who went to NASNA meeting. There were many Representative from different hospitals. Talking about networking, although they haven't finish yet, they'll remember you. That is what happen at the meetings last summer. Some of them got jobs for extern ships because of networking, some got calls 4 to 3 months early for jobs offers when they graduate. It can't hurt, there are several of my classmates are going to a Meeting at Mount Sinai for NASNA this Friday, the real reason there going because all of them want to start working there after they graduate this December.

I say Go, get info, have fun, give us some salaries offer when you get back. I would like to know
