How do I know if nursing is for me? So confused!

Published

Hello. I'm new here and have a question. I received my CNA license and I am currently working on my pre-reqs (two more classes to go) to get into the nursing program. I am now wondering if this is really my calling and I'm not sure how I decide. I would hate to go through school to get my RN to find out it's not what I want. I'm not sure what it is that is making this so hard to decide. I love helping people and I think I would be a great nurse. BUT, I also love office work and dumb as this may sound, I would love a career where I have to dress up. How do I make this important decision? If I was to work as a CNA, would I get a little taste of what a nursing career would be like? Are there any clerical type medical careers that pay well? Any help would be much appreciated.

See if you can "shadow" a nurse for one day as he or she works at the hospital, clinic, office, school, nursing home, or whichever workplace. After following a nurse around during the course of an average day, you might get a better idea of what they actually do. Also, you'll be better equipped to make an informed decision about your future. Good luck to you!

Working as a CNA would really allow you to see what a nurse does in a shift.

exactly what I was thinking....when you work as a CNA you are working with nurses - you'll see the good things and bad things...and be able to guage your stress level capacity.

I think if you become a nurse that it's a good idea to be a CNA first. It gives you a feel for the nursing field and then when and if you do become a nurse you'll appreciate what your CNA's do for you. If you love being a CNA more than likely you'll love being a nurse too. I was a CNA for 4 years before I went to nursing school and I believe that it helped me with time management, organization, and how to deal with the stresses of the nursing profession.
