My fundamentals of nursing book is starting off really dry. I wouldn't exactly call it boring...it's just really dull. It's bad enough I have a problem with procrastination so this book is really challenging for me. All the other textbooks we have for my nursing class are pretty interesting...even the drug calc book is a whole lot more fun to read than the fundamentals book. Any suggestions?

Read it in shifts. If I sit and read it all at once, I either fall asleep or my wanders to anything other than what I am reading.
We have so many reading assignments on the syllabus that I read a boring section, then move to something a bit more challenging or interesting.

Your book sounds sooo much like ALL of mine!!! I try to re-write them during the time I allocate to study that subect. Not the whole book, just go through it and then write down what you remember, then go ba ck to see if you skipped anything important. This is a really effective learning tool as it seems to get deeper into those stubborn brain cells unaccostemd to work....or is that only my brain cells????

Are the first three chapters of your fundamentals book History, law and ethics?? Mine are. I can't wait for the "Nursing" stuff, but having a hard time being interested in the history, law and ethics...Do you have a study guide with it...I thought I would go over the questions in that (It has answers in back)
Thanks for the tips. I am going to try and read the book in shifts and see if that works.
Susan,
Yes, the first 3 chapters are History, Law and Ethics, but we also had to read the sections on community-based settings and that was just as dry.
I'm of the belief that just because a subject is serious does not mean it cannot be entertaining. Even a few anecdotes thrown in would be a little better.

Here is what usually works for me. Grab the worst book you have for boring material. Place it on the coffee table. Then place your favorite drink and snack on top of it, turn on t.v. then get drunk. It seems way more interesting after the 6th drink...lol
really just take it in bits and pieces, try to get the jist of what it is saying and then move on to something more interesting, go back every now and again a read a little more. Hope I helped

I like the drinking & studying tip!! That would help....
I have a bad habit of stopping and getting a bite to eat after every 15 min or so. But I have heard you remember the most as you start to study & as you stop but the stuff in between tends to get lost... so frequent breaks are good ... just not good on the waistline if you don't have good snacks.

Rhona, this is too funny!
:chuckle
the first three chapters you have mentioned are the same ones in my book also.
i have a feeling there will be a lot of questions about the first 3 dry material chapters. instructors like to do that, just to make sure students read it !
